The Licensed Civil Engineer or REHS in our Wastewater Department will lead and manage the Wastewater team in performing complex engineering tasks, including the design and management of wastewater systems. This role involves creating detailed engineering drawings, conducting hydrology and hydraulic calculations, and providing field inspection services. The position will also be responsible for client communication, project coordination, and strategic planning.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide general direction and guidance to the team in performing complex drafting assignments.
- Create detailed engineering drawings for wastewater projects using AutoCAD Civil 3D
- Perform complex hydrology calculations and hydraulic evaluations of proposed drainage and wastewater features for permit submission
- Discuss potential new projects with prospective clients, author professional service agreements, and coordinate with project design team members including clients, Architects, contractors, and other Engineers
- Conduct on-site evaluations, construction observation, inspections, and project site reviews to confirm general conformance with approved plans
- Address plan check comments, respond to project-related inquiries, and manage client, consultant, and contractor calls
- Conduct preliminary soils exploration, site evaluations, percolation testing, groundwater testing, and existing septic system evaluations
- Develop OWTS (Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems) design and permit documents
- Ensure compliance with Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWIPP) requirements through proper design and implementation practices
- Supervise the wastewater team’s technical staff, participate in quarterly production reviews, and manage strategic planning and consultation efforts
- Schedule and perform field inspections, maintain inspection activity logs, and ensure outstanding client service
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of California, or REHS certified
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bluebeam, and other relevant engineering software
- Application of engineering principles, critical thinking, analysis, and innovative techniques
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to communicate effectively with clients, consultants, and project team members
- Ability to work well in a team environment, assign duties efficiently, and be a proactive team player
- Highly motivated, articulate, and self-starting individual
Physical Requirements
Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer, printer, fax, phone; to occasionally operate a motor vehicle; vision to read printed materials and computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. You may lift and carry equipment, take soil samples, and walk for long periods of time, all of which requires physical fitness. The position requires a capacity for strenuous physical effort such as walking and climbing over steep terrain. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
Work Environment
Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees will work in the field and do major labor-intensive perc testing and profiling, occasionally be exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Field work is sometimes performed in a physical environment where the terrain may be steep, uneven, rocky, and covered with thick tangled vegetation. Employees may occasionally interact with frustrated clients, neighbors, or public agencies.
Education and/or experience
Bachelors in environmental health. 1+ year of relative job experience. REHS or PE
