Position Summary: The Safety Technician in a food manufacturing environment is responsible for supporting and maintaining workplace safety programs, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and minimizing risks. This role involves assisting in safety audits, inspections, and training while helping to create a culture of safety across the facility. The Safety Technician will work closely with the Safety Supervisor, employees, and management to ensure a safe working environment for all.

Safety Program Support:

  • Assist in implementing and maintaining safety programs, policies, and procedures specific to food manufacturing.
  • Conduct safety inspections and audits of the facility, equipment, and processes to identify potential hazards.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, FDA, and other safety and health regulations within the food manufacturing industry.

Hazard Identification and Mitigation:

  • Identify safety risks and hazards in food processing areas and recommend corrective actions.
  • Support incident investigations by gathering information, documenting incidents, and assisting in root cause analysis to prevent recurrence.
  • Participate in risk assessments for new equipment, processes, and procedures.

Employee Training and Awareness:

  • Assist in delivering safety training sessions on proper food handling, sanitation, and workplace safety practices.
  • Provide employees with personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure proper use.
  • Promote safety awareness through regular communication, signage, and safety briefings.

Compliance and Record-Keeping:

  • Maintain accurate records of safety activities, training sessions, inspections, and incident reports.
  • Assist in preparing safety reports and documentation for internal and external audits.
  • Ensure safety data sheets (SDS) are accessible and up to date for chemicals used in food manufacturing processes.

Emergency Preparedness:

  • Assist in developing and maintaining emergency response plans, including evacuation procedures and fire safety protocols.
  • Support the coordination of emergency drills and participate in emergency response activities.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with the Safety Supervisor, production staff, and management to address safety concerns.
  • Communicate safety policies and updates to employees clearly and effectively.
  • Act as a point of contact for employees regarding safety issues, ensuring concerns are addressed promptly.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree or certification in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in safety within a manufacturing environment, food industry experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with OSHA, FDA, and food safety regulations is preferred.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify potential hazards.
  • Basic knowledge of safety regulations and food safety standards.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse teams.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and safety management software is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to walk, stand, and move throughout the manufacturing facility for extended periods.
  • Capable of working in environments with temperature variations, noise, and exposure to food processing equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
