Position Summary

With a deep commitment to philanthropic giving, the Philanthropy Director is a critical member of the staff leadership team. In partnership with the CEO, the Philanthropy Director is responsible for creating and energizing a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization and leading a comprehensive development program to grow the JCC’s development portfolio and strengthen relationships with supporters. The Philanthropy Director will drive and implement the fund development strategy and manage the operation of all efforts related to fundraising and cultivation. The Philanthropy Director will work in partnership with the CEO and with the active involvement of the members of the Board of Directors, other volunteer leadership, and other staff of the JCC.

Primary Responsibilities & Duties

Donor Development

  • Create and serve as the primary relationship manager of a portfolio of major donors and prospects, including leading the process of identifying/qualifying prospective donors, developing thoughtful donor strategies, building positive rapport, and directly soliciting and stewarding donors who have the capacity to become major donors (including planned gifts).
  • Work with staff and Board leadership to continue to build a culture of philanthropy and cultivate new donors from within the JCC membership and outside of the agency.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive data-driven and relationship-centered fundraising program that includes specific fundraising goals and targets, with a focus on the acquisition of leadership gifts from high level prospects and donors with the capacity to make gifts of $5,000+ annually.
  • Work with staff and Board leadership to ensure strategic moves management efforts as part of all solicitations and development efforts.

Relationship/Donor Management

  • Create, implement and manage a process/system for donor stewardship.
  • Update and maintain database of prospect research and donor management (via Raiser’s Edge).
  • Manage relationships with community organizations and foundations, as well as businesses, through grant efforts and community sponsorship programs.
  • Develop new relationships with community organizations and business through outreach to the broader community.
  • Plan events related to mission awareness, community outreach, fund-raising and other celebrations.

Administrative

  • Provide periodic reports to the CEO and Board leadership.
  • Work with Marketing/Communications to ensure timely relevant communication to donors and prospects.
  • Plan, facilitate, and attend all Development and event-related committee meetings. Work with appropriate staff to organize attendance, logistics, agenda development, materials preparation, meeting minutes, and follow-up items.
  • Manage the operations of donor stewardship and philanthropy focusing on data integrity and strategic and targeted communication and segmentation strategies.
  • Work with the Executive Assistant to ensure donor invoices, acknowledgments, and gift processing are completed in a timely manner.

Required Competencies

  • A minimum of four years of progressive responsibility in resource development roles, including: meeting and/or achieving campaign goals; successful grant applications; donor stewardship leading to long-term financial commitments; and a proven track record of major gift solicitation; knowledge of and experience with planned giving vehicles.
  • Working knowledge of fundraising best practices.
  • Effective communication, excellent written, verbal and presentation skills.
  • Decision-making ability to make sound data-based judgments.
  • Adept at organizing special events (both small and large scale).
  • Demonstrated success in ensuring teamwork and collaboration in a culture of accountability and discipline.
  • Visioning which demonstrates innovation, creativity, and a commitment to excellence.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to help design and implement new fundraising initiatives within an ever-changing organizational environment.
  • A deep knowledge of Judaism/a willingness to learn about Judaism and a personal passion for Jewish values and traditions, coupled with a strong desire to share this passion.
  • Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organization’s donor management system (Raiser’s Edge).
  • Proven ability to work with diverse groups of donors and understand and connect their motivation to the JCC’s mission.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to work in a demanding, fast-paced environment with additional hours/weekends, as needed.

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, non-profit administration, philanthropic studies or related field.
  • 4 years of progressive experience in fundraising, donor stewardship and philanthropy.

Work Environment

Work is performed both in an office setting and includes prolonged periods of computer and desk work (which can completed from both sitting and standing positions) as well as away from the office meeting with donors, prospects and others in the community. Work schedule typically follows a traditional schedule; however, attendance at and participation in events which outside of these hours is expected.
