Job Summary:

A heavy-duty diesel mechanic, also known as a diesel service technician or mechanic, performs a variety of tasks to maintain and repair diesel engines and heavy-duty vehicles:

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: (Additional duties as assigned)

  • Inspect

Check for physical damage to machinery and vehicles, including brake systems, steering mechanisms, transmissions, and engines

  • Diagnose

Read work orders, technical charts, and manuals to determine the work required. Use diagnostic test results and advanced technology to identify and test parts for mechanical problems

  • Repair

Replace defective parts and components, and perform major internal engine repairs and overhauls. This may include dismantling and removing engine assemblies, transmissions, and steering mechanisms

  • Maintain

Perform routine maintenance and preventative maintenance, such as cleaning and maintaining equipment, and creating recommended maintenance schedules

  • Test

Test vehicles and machines for performance and compliance, and record and organize records of serviced equipment

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: (Additional duties as assigned)

  • Consulting the customer and reading work orders to evaluate the tasks required
  • Preparing work plans after fully scoping out the issues
  • Running diagnostic tests on diesel engines and interpreting the results to offer suitable solutions
  • Inspecting vehicle systems, including suspensions, steering and exhausts
  • Repairing or replacing vehicle transmissions, brakes, engines and other associated parts
  • Conducting field visits in the case of an emergency or sudden breakdown
  • Test driving repaired vehicles to gauge their performance
  • Completing oil changes, wheel balancing, alignment and brake checks
  • Maintaining records of parts inventory and serviced vehicles
  • Adhere to dealership policies and procedures set forth by dealership management and manufacturer specifications.

Required Experience and Education:

  • High school diploma or GED and certification and training in diesel engine repair from a vocational school or a community college.

  • Additional Requirements:
  • Valid New York State Driver License.

Required Skills and Attributes:

  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions and information.
  • Working knowledge of all aspects of repairs for damaged body parts and bodies of vehicles.
  • Ability to interpret vendor catalogs.
  • Must have knowledge of machines, tools including their designs, uses, repairs and maintenance.
  • Time-management and organizational abilities.
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
  • Attention to detail.

Equipment, Machines and Software Used:

  • Computer software: Microsoft Office to include Word, Excel, Outlook, and CDK.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, use hands to finger, grasp, handle or feel, push, pull, reach, crouch, bend, kneel, climb, and perform repetitive motions of the hands and/or wrists.

Physical Exertion:

  • Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 70 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Light exertion can involve sitting, walking and/or standing most of the time.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Will be exposed to noise, vibrations, dust, exhaust fumes, paint and other hazardous or nonhazardous materials.
  • Must wear all protective equipment required for the position. (i.e., respirators, glasses, earplugs, paint suits, hoods, etc.).

Hazards and Safety Precautions:

  • Hazards: Slips, trips and falls, ergonomic injuries, and occasional lifting.
  • Safety Precautions: Breaks are encouraged to allow for stretching and training is provided covering slips, trips, and falls, safe lifting and stretching techniques.
