Baltimore, United States THE INGENUITY PROJECT Full time
Job DescriptionJob Description

High School Research Program Overview:

The Ingenuity Project oversees an independent STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) research program for high school students at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. Students have two options for conducting research - offsite and onsite. The offsite research program allows students to leave campus to work with university faculty, researchers, and other STEM professionals throughout the region. Ingenuity’s onsite pathway is being launched in 2024-25 and will offer students the opportunity to conduct an independent research project onsite in school centered in socially responsible STEM research. Guided by Ingenuity’s Director of Research, both options enable students to be creative, independent thinkers, strengthen their communication skills, produce high-quality written work, and help prepare a future study in STEM in college. Please visit these web pages to learn more about our Research Practicum.

What You'll Do:

THIS POSITION IS A 10-MONTH FULL TIME POSITION DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR. The Research Coordinator is responsible for supporting the success of Ingenuity’s high school STEM research program. The coordinator collaborates with the High School Director and Research Director to manage project plans for research events, such as the Research Speaker Series, field trips, and end of year Symposium; manages the request, ordering, and distribution of instructional resources and lab materials; supports the identification and matching of external research mentors; assist the teachers and students in identifying resources to learn prerequisite skills necessary for their research (such as coding language).

The Research Coordinator reports to the Deputy Director but works closely with the Research Director who works full time to oversee the full Research program for Ingenuity.

Your Role and Responsibilities:

1) Helps 9th and 10th grade students develop an interest in STEM research and refine their interest area.

  • Organizes a Fall Speaker Series designed to expose sophomores to research scientists in the Baltimore area, typically 4-8 events from September through December.
  • Coordinates workshops, field trips, and training sessions based on students’ interests and needs in specific research skills, data analysis or coding tools, or research ethics.

2) Collaborates with teachers and staff to help 11th grade students carry out their independent research projects.

  • Manage a process for ordering and distributing student research materials and lab supplies.
  • Assist students in the organization and storage of their research projects.
  • Maintain a resource library of STEM experts and research mentors, resources and training materials for students.

3) Leads the coordination of the end of year STEM Research Symposium.

  • Manages the project plan and checks with key staff and students on their progress on tasks.
  • Gathers student abstracts and other content to design and print the Symposium program.
  • Helps develop materials to promote the Symposium; recruit volunteers; and reserve space, food, and transportation.

4) Assist teachers in preparing students for STEM research competitions.

  • Provide feedback to students on papers, projects, and presentations, guided by teachers’ goals for these assignments.
  • Support Research Director in ensuring all students are registered for competitions and have filled out proper paperwork.
  • Ensure students have the materials needed for competitions, including that posters are well constructed.

5) Summer: Summer work is outside the full-time, 10-month position and is therefore paid hourly. During the summer, the Research Coordinator assists in checking on student research projects, especially if they need maintenance or care; helping track student research hours; and assisting the teachers and staff as needed to prepare for the next school year.

Your Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Baltimore City and Baltimore City Public Schools preferred.
  • Knowledge of high school student developmental milestones is preferred.
  • Familiarity with science content (biology, chemistry, physics) or coding languages such as R, Python, MATlab, or Java is preferred to support student projects and communicate with mentors.
  • Experienced in use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or Google applications (Docs, Sheets, Slides).
  • Comfort communicating and working with teachers, parents, and external partners.
  • Strong ability to work independently and as a positive, productive team member.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills to interact with students, parents and school teachers/administrators and co-workers in a congenial manner.

Keys to Your Success:

  • Model The Ingenuity Project Core Values for STEM Leadership: encourage innovation through taking risks and embracing new opportunities; nurture a passion for excellence, not perfectionism; cultivate curiosity about others and the world around us; expect collaboration where we listen to and share the spotlight with others; and foster inclusivity that honors the interests and perspectives of others from different cultures, identities and backgrounds.

  • Be results-oriented: Track record of accomplishing ambitious goals and getting results even when there are obstacles. Experience setting a high bar and meeting it, by thinking three (or 30) steps ahead to anticipate hurdles and come up with pragmatic solutions. Ability to backwards plan and involve stakeholders appropriately. Excited about the opportunity of preparing students to achieve at nationally competitive levels in STEM fields.

  • Hold a commitment to racial equity and social justice: Recognize the role of race, income, age, immigration status, and other identities in shaping disparities, and consistently amplify student voices to advocate for more equitable learning experiences. Understand how your identity shows up in your interactions with students and the community, and welcome, reflect on, and act on feedback with an eye toward continuous learning about race, ability, and other lines of difference. Possess a genuine love and a deep respect for young talented children coming from culturally and economically diverse populations.

Additional Notes:

  • Work is performed in the school. This position will require 3-5 evenings or Saturday in the year to attend symposiums or competitions with students. There may be travel to meetings and visits with students in their labs. Travel beyond one location in a day is reimbursed. This is a 10-month position, with light summer work.

Other Duties:

  • Please note that this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job. Duties, responsibilities and activities may change at any time with or without notice.
