Burlington, United States COTS Full time
Job DescriptionJob Description

We are seeking individuals interested in working with our Family Shelters, the Main Street Family Shelter and the Firehouse Family Shelter. Our emergency shelter programs provide opportunities for families without housing to have a safe, secure place to stay and have their basic needs met. The family shelters are congregate living settings, meaning each family has their own assigned room, with shared common spaces such as living space, kitchens, bathrooms, and playrooms. We can house approximately 15 families between our two facilities and have COTS staff available for support 24/7.

Responsibilities:

The primary responsibility of our Family Shelter Support team members is to ensure the safety and well-being of the families staying in our shelter. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Build trusting relationships with guests and ensure COTS is a welcoming, safe environment for all.
  • Perform preliminary/basic assessment of guest needs and priorities; make proper referrals to other staff members and agencies.
  • Support families with meeting the requirements and expectations of shelter programs, enforcing policies as needed.
  • Collaborate closely with the Housing Navigators to support families in moving through their individual housing plan to transition out of shelter into stable housing.
  • Assist families with accessing resources to meet their basic needs, such as hygiene products, food, diapers, etc.
  • Support/encourage guests who wish to participate in community engagement activities, outside of and within COTS.
  • Maintain the day-to-day upkeep of the shelter facilities.
  • Assist parents with ensuring children have the necessary resources and access to school and childcare programs.
  • Support parents by watching children for short periods while parents complete tasks, chores, etc. Parents are required to be onsite with children at all times, Shelter Support team members are never expected to watch children while parents leave the shelter.
  • Maintain knowledge of appropriate community outreach and public safety resources that can respond in crisis situations. Collaborate with community resources including BPD & Street Outreach (Howard Center) to address safety needs as they arise.

Requirements:

High school degree or equivalent required; Undergraduate degree in Social Work, Criminal Justice, Psychology, or other related field highly desired.

  • Minimum of one year of experience in a customer service or direct service role required; prior experience in human services preferred.
  • Combination of coursework and experience considered in lieu of degree.
  • Prior experience working directly with families and/or children is a plus.
  • Strong candidates will have experience with individuals or families experiencing homelessness and crisis intervention, as well as knowledge of resources and services for individuals and families.
  • Ability to work with individuals with mental health, medical, substance abuse, and employment issues required.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle conflict and crisis management required.
  • Knowledge of local resources and services for individuals and families is a plus.

All positions at COTS require a commitment to our mission: Advocating for long-term solutions to end homelessness and providing emergency shelter, services, and long-term housing for Vermonters who are experiencing homelessness or are marginally housed.

Full-time positions qualify for benefits through COTS; part-time positions may qualify for limited benefits.

To apply, submit your resume and cover letter to jobs@cotsonline.org.
