Oakland, United States Ella Baker Center for Human Rights Full time
Job DescriptionJob DescriptionSalary: $31.25-$36.06

Social Media Organizer - 2024

ELLA BAKER CENTER

FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

OAKLAND, CA

ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND

The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights (EBC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Oakland, California, organizing to shift resources away from prisons and punishment towards opportunities that make our communities safe, healthy, and strong. Named after civil rights hero Ella Baker, we mobilize Black, Brown, and low-income people to build power in our communities. For over 25 years, we have worked from the community to the legislative level to free our people from state violence. We are currently working to end mass incarceration and mass criminalization in the United States through Truth and Reinvestment—moving resources away from failed criminal legal policies and into creating opportunities, also known as “books not bars, jobs not jails, healthcare not handcuffs.” Through our programs, such as successful organizing in Alameda County, a robust state policy platform, and national leadership in the movement to end mass incarceration, EBC is building a culture of care to replace cages and cops.

The Ella Baker Center Action Fund (EBCAF) is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization and a separate but affiliated organization with the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights. EBCAF mobilizes our communities — current and formerly incarcerated people, their loved ones, people who are low income, and Black and Brown communities — to exercise their full political power and hold institutions accountable. Like our namesake, Ella Baker, we understand that true power lies within the people. EBCAF was born out of the vision to further build power amongst those most impacted by incarceration and criminalization. We mobilize these communities to ensure that our elected officials are focused on addressing the root causes of harm in our communities, instead of investing in failing institutions, such as prisons and policing, that exacerbate that harm.

OUR VALUES

At Ella Baker Center, we win by doing our liberation work in alignment with and guided by our core values:

  1. Prioritize people most impacted by policing and prisons
  2. Accountability
  3. Black Liberation
  4. Interconnection
  5. Transformation
  6. Culture of Care and Healing
  7. Self-Determination

The ideal candidate at EBC understands that our work uplifts the leadership and strategies of those most impacted by the criminal system: working-class people of color. Our primary aspiration is Black liberation, as these communities are the most harmed by policing and prisons. We practice accountability to our communities and each other by giving and receiving feedback, communicating directly, and building a culture of restorative justice.

We seek staff who are looking to not only transform the world, but are themselves excited to be personally transformed by organizing for liberation while caring for ourselves or each other. Transformation means that we do not turn anyone away who seeks our advocacy or support based on what the state has charged them with. Inherent in collective liberation work — we ask our staff to do the personal work of organizing to dismantle white supremacy and cisheteropatriarchy, and practice anti-oppression in everyday relationships. Our values mean we are building a leaderful movement with an emphasis on those who have been systematically denied leadership and power.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights seeks a creative and proactive, social media strategist with a passion for racial and economic justice to serve as Social Media Organizer. The Social Media Organizer is a full-time role responsible for utilizing EBC’s social media platforms to inspire, engage, and mobilize our supporters. This person will work closely with the Director of Communications and Digital Communications Manager, along with staff from other Ella Baker Center departments, to develop and implement a social media digital organizing strategy. The Social Media Organizer should have experience in designing visually compelling assets, organizing community members, and creating multi-faceted social media strategies for advocacy, legislation, political events, and media campaigns.

The Social Media Organizer will be responsible for managing and maintaining all social media platforms, expanding the Ella Baker Center’s digital reach, engaging in a timely manner with followers, and growing EBC’s social media following. The ideal candidate will be able to engage a diverse audience, work both independently and within a team, and have strong design, editing, writing, and creative story-telling skills.

PRIMARY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Social Media Strategy

  • Support the development and implementation of the organization's social media strategy within the communications team; write, edit, and schedule social media content for EBC and EBCAF accounts.
  • Advance the Ella Baker Center brand and help ensure that branding and messaging are consistent on all of our social media platforms.
  • Design original and brand-consistent graphics to be utilized on EBC-owned channels, emails, and campaigns.
  • Respond to organization-wide requests for social media and graphic requests.
  • Work with the Director of Communications, Digital Communications Manager, and programmatic staff to support social media strategies for campaigns, programs, and our legislative agenda.
  • Working with the Communications Manager, support the continued development of EBCAF’s social media channels and political content and create content as needed.
  • Proactively work with staff across departments to forecast design and social content needs for priority programs, campaigns, and events.
  • Regular reporting and analysis of social media channels to measure growth and engagement.
  • Grow social media followings and online presence while maintaining and adhering to organizational brand guidelines.
  • Attend, record, and live post from in-person and virtual events.
  • Plan and execute rapid response content on all social platforms in alignment with email and digital communications.

Communications Team Administration

  • Monitor and expedite the EBC communications team shared email account for incoming requests.
  • Support the creation and updating of the team editorial and social media content calendar, as well as lead in the scheduling and posting of social media via a Social Media Management tool.
  • Support the communications team in shared meeting facilitation, note-taking, and other organizational tasks as needed.
  • Attend, actively participate in, and document events and in-person activities on behalf of the communications team.

General EBC Support

  • Through shared facilitation of all-staff and cross-team meetings, occasional events, restructuring conversations, long-term planning, and partner/coalition interaction, you will — along with your colleagues — support the organization’s growth and stability throughout the year.
  • Support the onboarding of new staff as necessary.
  • Support ongoing staff training around social media, design and branding, communications tools, and best practices.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • 1-3 or more years of experience in social media management and graphic design, preferably related to racial and economic justice issues.
  • Excellent written communication skills, editing, proofreading, fact-checking, keen attention to detail, and ability to break down complex concepts.
  • Proficiency with multiple social media platforms and an interest in using these tools to drive action and engagement.
  • Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite, specifically InDesign and Illustrator, Canva, and any other graphic design tools.
  • Experience with social media management tools such as Buffer and Sprout Social.
  • Experience creating engaging, brand-driven social media content for a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to attend in-person events for Ella Baker Center, including trips to Sacramento and other locations.
  • Proven commitment to and knowledge of issues relating to racial, economic, and gender justice.
  • Team player attitude, capable of collaborating with team members, strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to take feedback.
  • Excellent time management and the ability to stick to deadlines; adept at managing competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Comfortable and skilled at communicating with a wide diverse audience, including Black and Brown communities, incarcerated people and their loved ones, formerly incarcerated people, people with low or no incomes, and movement partners.
  • Respects and has knowledge of cultures, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientations and age groups other than one’s own, able to work effectively with all.
  • Ability to use 2SLGBTQIA+ staff and community names & pronouns.
  • Bi-lingual Spanish & English proficiency is a plus
  • A valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance or the alternative means and willingness to travel.
  • Be located in the Bay Area.
