Summary

The Teacher is responsible for the overall educational operation in an O.C.E.A.N., Inc. Head Start classroom. The Teacher will report directly to the Education Supervisor and indirectly to the Education Coordinator.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities of the Teacher shall include but not necessarily limited to the following:

· Follow agency protocol and Policies and Procedures

· Work within the philosophy and framework of the Head Start Performance Standards and the regulations of New Jersey Office of Licensing.

· Respond appropriately when discrepancies are noted.

· Maintain regular departmental filing, records and ensure complete accuracy of information.

· Attend staff/department meetings, training, special events, in-service, and workshops when assigned or directed by the Education Supervisor, Education Coordinator and/or V.P. of Children’s Services.

· Possess knowledge of and perform in accordance with all aspects of the program including grant guidelines with audit ready documentation.

· Implement the goals and activities provided in the Education Service Plan (lesson plans, anecdotal records, daily schedule, etc.).

· Utilize Teaching Strategies Gold to ensure planning and implementation of developmentally appropriate practices to enhance children’s learning.

· Observe and record each child’s progress in Teaching Strategies and complete screenings.

· Enter all required child data into ChildPlus Program (attendance, events, notes).

· Supervise education staff within the classroom according to procedures found in the Head Start Personnel Policies and Procedures Handbook.

· Conduct a minimum of two (2) Home Visits per year

· Conduct a minimum of two (2) Parent/Teacher Conferences per year.

· Use space, materials, and routine as resources for constructing a safe and healthy environment, which includes activities and experiences which are developmentally appropriate.

· Incorporate the meals served daily into the classroom learning experience.

· Conduct two (2) Nutritional Activities a month (1 cooking, 1 non-cooking).

· Work cohesively with coordinators, managers, supervisors, and assistants in the classroom.

· Responsible for inventory, equipment control, and completing purchase orders for education supplies for the classroom.

· Responsible for completing incident/accident reports for the children in their car and forwarding copies to the Health Services Manager.

· Responsible for following and implementing the appropriate health guidelines when dispensing medicine and completing the appropriate documentation to be sent to the Health Services Manager.

· Responsible for maintaining accurate attendance, CACFP and any other mandatory documentation for the classroom.

· To become CPR certifies and First Aid trained.

· Implement the Head Start transition plan and attend all related transition meetings under the direction of the Education Coordinator. Submit any necessary transition reports requested.

· All other specific duties as outlined in the program performance standards and /or required for the program operation.

· Maintain a professional attitude, work cooperatively with HS/EHS staff and parents; and treat children and their families with dignity and respect.

· Other duties ass assigned by the V.P. of Children’s Services, or their representative, as needed to support the goals and mission of O.C.E.A.N., Inc. Head Start.

· Other duties as assigned by the CEO that are deemed necessary for program operations.

Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or related field, or related degree with six (6) classes in Early Childhood Education or bachelor's degree with P-3. Minimum two (2) years' experience in Early Childhood Education in a group setting. Experience in supervising education staff preferred. Bilingual-Spanish speaking preferred. Valid New Jersey Driver’s License and transportation. You must be able to lift 45 pounds.

· The teacher must have a warm, friendly personality, be sensitive to the needs of the children and families and be able to relate well with others and willing to fulfil job responsibilities in accordance with the program philosophy. The teacher must be able to communicate professionally and openly. He/she is expected to be a role model, demonstrating the values, attitudes, beliefs, and choices that make this program surpass expectations.

· Required to speak, read, and write English

· Required to deal effectively with the public, vendors, and staff.

· Required to communicate and work with adults from diverse backgrounds.

· In accordance with State Law (P.L. 2000, c.77) and Head Start regulation ACF-PI-HS-09-05, all staff are required to secure a Criminal History Record Information (CHRI) fingerprint background check prior to hire.

· Each employee shall submit a doctor’s statement, verifying that he/she is physically capable of performing the essential functions of the job and has a negative Mantoux result or non-active disease.

· Ability to work a flexible schedule including some evenings and/or weekends. Physically fit with an annual health examination and criminal background check per Head Start and Office of Licensing guidelines. Ability to work effectively with minimal daily guidance. Knowledge of community resources. Successful experience working in a team setting. Ability to present a positive image of the organization to members of the community.

Physical Demands:

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 45 pounds. Actively supervises children by leading gross motor activities and participating in walking field trips to surrounding areas. Stands and walks about observing and interacting with the children at play, facilitating learning and ensuring safety of the children in your care. Stoops, crawls, kneels, and bends in order to speak to children at their eye level, to play with them, and to pick up toys and equipment off the floor.
