Lake Placid, United States North Country School Full time
Job DescriptionJob Description

About North Country School & Camp Treetops

Located on the outskirts of Lake Placid, NY, Camp Treetops and North Country School sit on a 220-acre campus amid majestic mountain peaks in New York State’s Adirondack Park. Since 1921 and 1938 respectively, we have been nationally renowned for pioneering educational programs rooted in progressive practices and experiential learning. Both Camp and School guide children to engage the natural world, take on intellectual and physical challenges in a nurturing community, and cultivate independence and creativity.

Position Overview

North Country School and Camp Treetops seek a full-time Maintenance Technician to support the institution’s Facilities and Maintenance team. In this role, you will be primarily responsible for routine, predictable campus tasks related to operations, maintenance and preventative maintenance of the campus, including its various Camp and School buildings and structures.

What You Will Do

As an integral part of the Maintenance team you will work independently to address daily interior and exterior maintenance items to keep Camp and School learning spaces safe and up-to-date. You will use a critical eye to identify needed repairs and preventative maintenance items as you provide critical support to the campus community. This will include working to ensure timely openings of Camp and School, a key element of providing a positive first impression of our campus.

How You Will Spend Your Time

Daily Maintenance (60% of time)

As a Maintenance – Level II the bulk of your work will revolve around managing daily maintenance requests, completing work-orders, and being responsive to maintenance items that arise throughout the day. This includes:

  • Completion of maintenance work order requests that have come in via MaintainX, our work order management platform, and been assigned by the Maintenance Manager.
  • Daily monitoring of the potable and/or wastewater systems.
  • Monitoring of all heat plants during the winter.
  • Removal of snow from all campus roads.
  • Response to emergency maintenance items such as tree removal, repairs, etc.
  • Periodic trips off campus to obtain needed materials and specialty supplies.
  • Light carpentry and other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities or Maintenance Manager.

Preventative Maintenance / Long-Term Maintenance (20% of time)

A key component of this position will be managing the yearly preventative maintenance list as identified in the organization’s “Operations and Maintenance Scope of Work” document. In conjunction with this work, you would be responsible for addressing the off-season work orders from School and Camp that need to be completed to allow for successful opening of both programs. This would include things such as:

  • Making minor repairs to screens, doors, steps, and painting Camp cabins during off-season.
  • Completing similar work in staff and student living spaces during School break periods.
  • Identifying areas of excessive wear / damage to facility buildings and grounds that require prompt attention or should be added to the annual preventative maintenance list.

Providing Support to Program Staff (20% of time)

Our community is fast-paced, dynamic, and unique. Constant engagement with faculty and staff will require approximately 20% of your time to assist with set-up / tear-down for events related to campus programming activities, family-focused and special community events, etc.

The Skills You Bring to Our Community

  • The ability to communicate well with others.
  • A desire to provide quality work every day and to have pride in that work.
  • An ability to adapt to changing situations while maintaining a calm and thoughtful approach to your work.
  • A safety mindset, for yourself and others, as well as for the tools and equipment utilized in completing your daily tasks.
  • A general knowledge of maintenance related work.

The Values You Bring to Our Community

  • Respect for children and our learning/living environment.
  • Deep appreciation for community and working with others
  • Curiosity and a desire to continuously learn
  • Warmth, grace, kindness, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone
  • Independence and ability to be a self-starter

The Benefits of Working Here

In addition to a wage of between $18-$20 per hour (dependent upon experience), you will enjoy:

  • Health insurance from day one
  • A retirement plan with TIAA
  • Personal time off
  • Paid family leave
  • Childcare stipend
  • Tuition remission eligibility
  • Flexible work
  • Farm-fresh meals daily
