The primary purpose of our Housing Counselor, is to assist Great Lakes Credit Union to live out our vision, "To be the members' trusted financial partner".

As the Housing Counselor, you will be responsible for conducting homebuyer education and financial education workshops, housing counseling (includes pre-purchase, rental, and default foreclosure) and credit counseling services, including administrative responsibilities. You will also act as the members’ most valued financial partner, taking every opportunity to understand and assess their financial needs and goals.

As the Housing Counselor you will:

  • Represent the Housing Counseling Program as the initial point of contact, providing triage and intake, and scheduling appointments as needed
  • Manage and provide housing counseling services by meeting one-on-one with clients interested in, but not limited to: home buying and maintaining homeownership through delinquency counseling, credit counseling, rental counseling, and general financial education.
  • Organize and provide financial education classes covering the topics of, but not limited to: money management, credit, mortgage loans, shopping for a home, post-purchase, foreclosure prevention, and avoiding predatory loans. Weekends and evenings as necessary.
  • Maintain client files and provide case management services. Follow-up with clients concerning matters discussed in counseling sessions.
  • Provide assistance to the department supervisor on any reporting needs and requirements.
  • Do weekly outreach and canvasing of local communities.
  • Perform on-going casework management and follow-ups of client pipeline.
  • Educate clients in the areas of, but not limited to: bankruptcy, collection actions, court judgments, credit education, credit reports, fair housing issues, RESPA, FCRA, HMDA, consumer protection laws, condominium education, and student loans.

Requirements needed for success in the role:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • 1 to 3 years of experience
  • Ability to structure and present information for a large group
  • Demonstrated skill in organizing and prioritizing work load
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and writing
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office
  • HUD certification is a plus but not required, must have the ability to get certified within 6 months.
