Job Title: CNC Operator B

Department: CNC Machine Shop

Reports To: Machine Shop Supervisor

Shift: 2nd Shift Monday - Thursday 3pm - 1:30am, OT on Fridays depending on workload (5+ Hours)

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Sets up and operates numerical control machine to cut, shape, or form metal work pieces to specifications by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

  • Maintains reliable attendance and adheres to set work schedules as outlined in the BAKER EMPLOYMENT POLICY manual
  • Reviews setup sheet and specifications to determine setup procedure, machining sequence, and dimensions of finished work piece.
  • Attaches fixture to machine bed and positions and secures work piece in fixture according to setup instructions.
  • Assembles cutting tools in tool holders and positions tool holders in machine spindles as specified or inserts cutting tools in specified machine magazines.
  • Loads control media such as disk, tape, or other in machine control console or enters commands to retrieve pre-programmed machine instructions from data base.
  • Manipulates controls and enters commands to index cutting tool to specified set point and to start machine.
  • Observes and listens to machine operation to detect malfunctions such as worn or damaged cutting tools.
  • Changes cutting tools and location of work piece during machining process as specified in setup instructions.
  • Measures work piece for conformance to specifications.
  • Notifies supervisor of discrepancies.
  • Diagnoses program or machine discrepancies and takes corrective action by making offset or other changes to numerically controlled program.
  • Adjusts machine feed and speed and changes cutters to machine parts according to specifications when automatic programming is faulty or machine malfunctions.
  • Machines materials other than metal such as composites, plastic, and rubber.
  • Maintains and records accurate count of work pieces produced and personal hourly attendance data.
  • Practices safe work habits, maintains workplace in good order, and wears all issued personal protective equipment in the workplace.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Successful completion of approved trade-related apprenticeship program resulting in journeyman status or successful completion of a course of study at an approved technical institution resulting in a diploma or degree in machine tool operation (in such cases the course of study must be approved prior to matriculation to be applicable to this requirement). Possess a valid forklift driver’s license or is capable of obtaining one.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. (Also see section titled Certificates, Licenses, Registrations.)

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts. Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, decimals and fractions. Convert fractions to decimals. Perform metric to inch conversions. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Competence, awareness, and training for probationary employees will be assessed by the “New Employee Checklist,” and the evaluation conducted 90 days, along with other training as needed. Competence, awareness, and training for regular employees will be assessed when annual evaluations are conducted, along with other measurements in accordance with the area the employee is assigned to.
