Job Summary:

The Construction Project Estimator will gather, evaluate, and then prepare detailed total cost information for cost-effectiveness for and during the construction bid process. They may visit construction sites to gather information and analyze proposals, specifications, blueprints, and construction documents in order to understand the project. Estimators work closely with project managers to coordinate and oversee the vendors and/or subcontractors in the bid process. They determine the time, labor, materials, and product costs for the project and communicate the requirements to the client. An estimator works mainly in an office environment but may visit construction sites occasionally as needed to obtain necessary information.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Review blueprints, plans, and specifications in order to understand the project as a whole and then prepare detailed estimates.
  • Research and acquire sub-contractors through competitive bid and negotiated terms.
  • Estimate time, labor, construction materials, and product costs to determine the overall cost for construction projects.
  • Prepare cost estimates, budgets, and updates for the client and the project managers.
  • Provide all subcontractors with access to drawings and specifications prior to the bid process.
  • Attend the pre-bid meetings if needed.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and related project estimating software.
  • Strong math and computer skills.
  • Critical thinking skills with ability to problem solve and make effective decisions.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously using good time management skills.
  • Use of Sage Estimating software preferred.
  • A working knowledge of Auto CAD a plus.
  • Thorough understanding of plans, specifications, and regulations.
  • Ability to remain flexible and efficient in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet bid day deadlines.
  • Ability to effectively multitask while analyzing and solving problems.
  • Thorough understanding of engineering, architectural, and other construction drawings.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Science or Construction Estimating.
  • Or at least three years of construction project management experience.
  • Construction Estimating certification by the American Institute of Constructors or Construction Management Association of America preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of jobsite in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, or stretching.
  • May require some travel.
  • Exposure to characteristic construction site dangers.
  • Must be available to address issues with project managers.
