LITIGATION PARALEGAL

We are seeking a mid to senior level Defense Litigation Paralegal who is dedicated and ready to be a part of a great team. This firm offers a state-wide practice specializing in litigation and transactional law with over 20 licensed attorneys, eight of whom are owners and shareholders of the Firm. There is corresponding legal support staff, as well as administrative staff in each of the offices. The litigation work is court work in state and federal court as well as contested proceedings of any type before state and federal agencies and in arbitration forums. The transactional work is classified as General Counsel (GC), City Attorney (CA), and as Special Counsel (SCNSL) work. The Firm’s client base is limited to local government entities, including but not limited to cities, counties, districts, other units of local government and their elected and appointed officials and employees. The Firm has four offices located in central and south Texas in San Antonio, the Rio Grande Valley, Austin, and most recently, the Houston metroplex area, known as the Texas Gulf Coast office (TXGC Office). The TXGC Office is the Firm’s newest office and is still under development.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

The litigation paralegal position will be under the supervision of a Managing Partner, and the primary handling attorney as part of a litigation team assigned to each file matter. The position is responsible for providing litigation support work as more detailed below. Because of the small size of the office, duties will include some administrative support duties, such as answering phones, processing mail, dealing with vendors, and other office tasks as needed. There will be collaboration with attorneys and staff from the firms other offices in carrying out the work of the Firm.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE LITIGATION POSITION:

In order to perform this job successfully, a candidate must be able to execute the below essential functions:

  • File intake, opening, processing, logging, organizing, maintaining, files throughout the life of the matter.
  • Calculating and calendaring all deadlines pertaining to a file, both those required by court rules and orders as well as internal administrative deadlines; and assisting handling attorneys to keep up with deadlines.
  • Drafting pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery requests and responses, and appropriately filing with federal, state, county courts, appellate courts, supreme courts, and governmental agencies.
  • Drafting written discovery requests, responses, and objections to all forms of discovery (interrogatories, requests for production, requests for admissions, and initial disclosures, calculating and calendaring legal deadlines, and interacting with clients to ensure accurate and comprehensive information is obtained in all discovery and project-related matters. Assist team with informal investigative discovery.
  • Setting up and coordinating depositions, inspections, medical examinations, court hearings, service process, meetings and all other forms of investigatory discovery devices used in legal proceedings.
  • Conducting, preparing, and organizing legal research, notes, and legal documents, including pulling and citing legal reference materials, and assuring the accuracy of citations.
  • Serve as a liaison between the attorney and clients, witnesses, vendors, opposing counsel, and the Courts.
  • Correctly applying local, state, and federal rules and resources related to the area of practice including the Federal and State common law resources, Federal and State statutory law resources, the Federal and State administrative and regulatory law resources, and Texas Attorney General Opinions.
  • Setting up pretrial conferences, coordinating multi-party teleconferences, drafting pretrial documents, and assisting in trial preparations as needed including issuing subpoenas, putting together trial exhibits, conducting witness interviews, setting up trial notebooks, assuring needed items are available at the courthouse, and attending trial when needed.
  • Setting up, coordinating, and working with proposed mediators to establish mediations and other neutral meeting sites for cases.
  • Coordinating and maintaining multiple electronic and hard copy calendars, and arranging for all related materials, personnel, and resources necessary to carry out the legal projects assigned.
  • Accurately tracking billable and non-billable time through the Firm’s time entry software. Reviewing draft billing to ensure accuracy.
  • Handling administrative duties such as faxing, emailing, postage, answering phones, taking accurate telephone messages (especially from the news media), etc., if necessary.
  • Other paralegal duties as assigned by Managing Partner and / or handling attorney.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION:

  • An associate degree or certification in Paralegal Studies or a minimum of 5 years of litigation paralegal experience can be substituted for this degree/certification requirement.
  • A minimum of three years of paralegal experience with an emphasis in supporting civil litigation attorney in state and federal court
  • Proficiency using MS Office 365 software; Adobe Acrobat; Case Management software (Center Base and NetDocs); e-filing software in state and federal court.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team approach.

OFFICE ENVIRONMENT:

The paralegal position is situated in the firms office located in League City, Texas. The office is in a startup phase, but is modeled after the other more developed offices. This newer office currently accommodates office space for one part-time administrator, two paralegals, and three attorneys, one of whom is a managing partner. The expectation is that the office will expand.

The firm office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. However, schedules of individual employees are set by the Managing Partner and vary depending on the needs of the Office and the needs of the employee. The firm offers a hybrid schedule where employees can work part-time in the League City, TX office and part-time remote.
