JOB LOCATION: Bus Operations Facility is located at 1101 Teasley Lane, Denton, TX

 

PURPOSE OF JOB
Mechanics perform varying levels of repairs and preventive maintenance activities for the fleet. Evaluate, troubleshoot, analyze, and test transit vehicle systems to determine the nature and extent of defects. Assist with repairs and replacement of transmissions, front and rear end assemblies, power steering, braking mechanisms, electronic engine and equipment systems and controls, and hydraulic systems.

 

Mechanic II will also replace transmissions, front and rear end assemblies, power steering, braking mechanisms, electronic engine and equipment systems and controls, HVAC, airbrakes and hydraulic systems.

 

Mechanic III will also overhaul heavy equipment systems such as engines, transmissions, front and rear end assemblies, power steering, braking mechanisms, electronic engine and equipment systems and controls, HVAC, airbrakes and hydraulic systems.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are standard for this position.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.

  • Assists higher level mechanic with repairs for the fleet, including, but not limited to: replacing and repairing,  transmissions, front and rear end assemblies, power steering, braking mechanisms, electronic engine and equipment systems and controls, and hydraulic systems.
  • Performs preventative and periodic maintenance inspections; diagnoses and ensures the timely and effective repair of problems identified during inspections.
  • Advises supervisor immediately if additional work is needed, if work outlined is not needed, or if repairs cannot be completed within the promised time frame.
  • Evaluates, troubleshoot, analyzes, and tests transit vehicle systems to determine the nature and extent of defects.
  • Ensures that all vehicle condition reports are accurate and properly addressed.
  • Assists in maintaining all maintenance records (e.g., work orders) in an “inspection ready” state at all times; and ensures repair orders are neat and accurate.
  • Tracks all repairs in progress to ensure the timely and correct repair of vehicles for return to operations; and knows the maintenance status of all assigned vehicles at all times.
  • Performs road calls as needed to ensure operational efficiency.

       Mechanic II also includes:

  • Performs repairs for the fleet, including, but not limited to, replacing, and repairing transmissions, front and rear end assemblies, power steering, braking mechanisms, electronic engine and equipment systems and controls, HVAC, airbrakes, and hydraulic systems.
  • Assists lower level mechanics and may provide training as assigned.

       Mechanic III also includes:

  • Performs repairs for the fleet, including, but not limited to: replacing, repairing, and overhauling heavy equipment systems such as engines, transmissions, front and rear end assemblies, power steering, braking mechanisms, electronic engine and equipment systems and controls, and hydraulic systems.
  • Assists and trains lower level mechanics as assigned.

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION (where applicable, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered)

Must be 21 years of age or older. High School Diploma, GED or technical training & certification related to maintenance. Must possess a valid, non-restricted Texas Class B CDL License with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsements. Must have and maintain a clean driving record. Must have their own tools.

 

Mechanic I – Two to three years of experience working as a mechanic in transit or very similar environment. Technical training in field from vocational school highly desired.

 

Mechanic II – Three to five years of experience working as a mechanic in transit or very similar environment. Technical training in field from vocational school highly desired.

 

Mechanic III – Five or more years of experience working as a mechanic in transit or very similar environment. Technical training in field from vocational school highly desired.

 

Applicants must have at least two years of driving history and possess a valid, unrestricted license.

 

Established driving history must be clear of the following:

1)    No moving violations on driving record within the last thirty- six (36) months.

2)    No accidents where the applicant has contributed to cause within the 3 years prior to the application date.

3)    Have appeared in court as required.

4)    No violations related to drugs/alcohol. 

 

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

·         Ability to obtain/maintain a minimum Class B valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) endorsement for public passenger transport valid within the State of Texas.

·         Ability to obtain/pass ASE Transit Bus Certification H-1, H-2; for Mechanic II also H-3, H-4; for Mechanic III also H-5, H-6 within twelve months of hire.

·         Working knowledge of hand tools and equipment.

·         Ability to perform major and minor repairs to engines, transmission, brake, and hydraulic systems.

·         Ability to use computerized scanning equipment to aid in vehicle diagnosis.

·         Ability to use diagrams and service manuals for troubleshooting.

·         Ability to communicate effectively in both the written and spoken form; uses appropriate grammar, accurate spelling and punctuation when communicating through written form; communicates effectively with internal and external customers.

·         Ability to interact professionally with internal and external clients.

 

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES: Physical activity includes, but is not limited to: on a continuous basis, sit on bus for long periods of time; prolonged periods of driving; write or use keyboard to communicate through written means; repeated use of sight to inspect work and equipment; repetitive hand motions, such as steering; hearing and speech to communicate both on the phone and in person. Involves travel in automobile and walking. Frequently requires use of hands, fingers, repetitive hand/finger motions, and sitting, as well as bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, standing walking, reaching with hands and arms, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 75 lbs. Repeated use of hearing and speech to communicate on telephone, radios, and in person.
