Donation Liaison: Summary of duties and responsibilities:

The DL is responsible for providing education, counseling, and support to all potential donor families and developing relationships with key stakeholders in assigned hospitals served by MORA. The DL is responsible for initiating the process of discussing the organ donation option with the family with reasonable discretion and sensitivity to the family’s circumstances, values or beliefs and obtain consent.  The DL will engage, support, and collaborate with donor families, hospital staff, medical examiners, coroners, and funeral homes to optimize donation.  This includes and is not limited to assisting hospital personnel in the development and implementation of organ and tissue donation policies and procedures, providing donation education and awareness programs to hospital personnel, and conducting donor or referral follow-up conferences and meetings. The DL is responsible for writing organ and tissue donor follow-up letters, in person and telephone support of donor families.  The DL is responsible for engaging hospital leaders, and staff to create champions that can advocate for donation and influence policies within the assigned hospitals. The DL is responsible for communicating with funeral homes, coroners, and other stakeholders in MORA’s DSA as needed to discuss potential organ donors.

Education and Work Experience Requirements:

  1. Minimum two years experience in counseling, bereavement care, ministry, or social work or related experience in grief, trauma, or crisis management.
  2. Bachelor’s degree in any of the above is preferred.
  3. Demonstrated ability to persist in situations dealing with intense emotions and families in crisis.
  4. Excellent ability to communicate by demonstrated interpersonal and listening skills.
  5. Demonstrated ability to develop relationships and persuade stakeholders.
  6. Experience in project management or strategic planning preferred.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Is expected to take on call responsibility on a rotating basis with other Family Care staff members.
  2. Respond promptly to organ and tissue referrals at assigned hospitals and throughout MORA’s Donation Service Area
  3. Conduct accurate, effective early onsite/phone evaluations
  4. Review hospital charts and current records of potential donors for medical eligibility/suitability
  5. Participate in medical rounds with neuro and trauma services and facilitate necessary testing and services
  6. Conduct huddles with hospital staff during critical points in the referral and/or authorization process
  7. Document findings and follow-up plans in hospital charts; communicate same to hospital staff while on site
  8. Effectively and efficiently gather patient clinical and social/emotional information for evaluation purposes
  9. Determine legal next-of-kin and/or decision maker
  10. Facilitate donation of donors in first-person registry; guide family to help them understand the donation process
  11. Compassionately provide information about the benefits of donation to potential organ donor families to authorize organ and/or tissue donation; meet minimum authorization rates
  12. Counsel families through donation process and provide support during and after the donation process and provide outcomes post-op
  13. Participate in departmental quality assurance initiatives
  14. Function as an expert resource within the hospital on all aspects of organ and tissue donation
  15. Establish and maintain meaningful relationships with hospital staff
  16. Collaborate with hospital administration to develop and implement plans to optimize hospital performance
  17. Review and analyze key donation outcomes to identify areas of opportunity
  18. Develop solutions to issues that impede the donation process
  19. Facilitate hospital programs and committees that influence organ and tissue donation
  20. Develop and present professional education programs such as hospital unit-specific presentations, physician in-services, medical grand rounds, hospital ethics committee presentations, etc.
  21. Attends ongoing training for bereavement or counseling support annually.
  22. Writes all initial follow up letters to organ and tissue donor families who consented informing them of donation outcome.
  23. Collaborate with FH/Coroner Liaison as necessary, to address problems or concerns with funeral homes and coroners
  24. Attends and actively participates in daily operations call(s)
  25. Performs other duties and assignments as required by his/her supervisor
