Job purpose

This position assists CMS’s High Angle Division by directing rope access workers to facilitate repair inspection, maintenance and repair evolutions. This position is synchronous with the position of Incident Commander (directing the execution of emergency rescue procedures) in the event of an emergency within a confined space area or while working at heights.

Duties and responsibilities

Primary job duties and responsibilities are:

  • Confirm project site adheres to company and regulatory standards and guidelines.
  • Develop or assist in developing an access work and rescue plan including:
    • Perform Risk and Hazard Analysis based on space location and type of work being performed including viability of victim / rescuers safety should an emergency occur
    • Reviewing the confined space permit
    • Evaluating actions and information gathered by the Confined Space Attendant
    • Request additional resources as needed
  • Conduct or assist in conducting team briefings based on the developed plan
    • Clearly define the access work plan and responsibilities for all team members. The plan and briefing should include the following:
      • Site description, including illustration
      • Team member assignments for the operation (entrants, attendants, rescue assignments)
      • Confined space attendant - Air monitoring and ventilation requirements
      • Rigging systems including patient packaging available
      • Identify stand-by members (as applicable)
      • Review personal protective gear requirements
      • Review communication plan including emergency evacuation signals and procedure
  • Verify pre-entry procedures such as:
    • Safe entry permit conditions have been verified (Lock out/Tag out completion, ventilation established, atmospheric monitoring completed, etc.
    • Act as incident commander and commence rescue operations should the need occur ASTM Level III technician or equivalent.
  • Additional responsibilities
    • Complete all required documentation on Site Docs and assist others as needed.
    • Remain up to date with all Safety Credentials

Qualifications

A CMS Rescue technician is a self-motivated, ambitious, and personable individual who assists in maintaining the safety of CMS employees and a safe work environment. The minimum qualifications required to successfully perform the job include:

  • Ability and freedom to travel- typical travel arrangements provided by employer to include travel, hotel, and per diem
  • Must be in proper physical condition and pass a drug and alcohol test
  • Must have a valid Drivers’ License
  • Fluent Computer Skills in Microsoft Office: Outlook, Word, Excel, & Power Point are a must
  • Good Communication / People Skills
  • NFPA 1006 & NFPA 2500 or equivalent rope rescue training qualified
  • Complete an Annual Safety Program Training for OSHA & MSHA (Provided in-house)
  • Emergency Response and Incident command training preferred
  • 2 years' experience preferred

Working conditions

This position involves extensive traveling throughout the United States, depending on where jobs are located. Jobsites include but are not limited to power plants, waste to energy plants, pulp and paper mills, and cement plants.

  • Working in confined spaces
  • Working in spaces which require a respirator and proper ventilation
  • Working at extreme heights in potential adverse conditions

Physical requirements

This position is physically demanding. Physical requirements are:

  • 40-100 Pounds lifting / pulling
  • Able to climb a minimum of 5 flights of stairs
  • Work 10-12 hour shifts, occasionally up to 15 hour shifts
  • Work 7 days a week
  • Kneeling
  • Standing
  • Squatting
  • Overhead work
  • Ability to physically fit into confined spaces / small portals
  • Pass a medical questionnaire and fit test

Additional Info

This is a seasonal position: Seasonal employment means annually recurring periods of work of less than 12 months each year. Seasonal employees are permanent employees who are placed in non-duty/non-pay status and recalled to duty in accordance with pre-established conditions of employment. Seasonal employees are eligible for the same benefits offered to full-time employees as long as they meet the eligibility criteria.

Pay will be based on experience and skills qualifications. Pay scale is as follows: $30-$40/Hour

We work in all 50 states and travel is required for all field employees.
