Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I

$29.34/hour

NATURE OF WORK:

This position performs routine tasks and duties in monitoring, repairing and controlling functions of Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) equipment and processes to ensure compliance with tribal, state and federal standards.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Obtain samples and perform tests such as dissolved oxygen, PH, five day CBOD, chlorine residual, 24-hour fecal coliform test and total suspended solids.
  • Sample for and perform microscopic examination of bacteria for sewage treatment purposes; analyze and correlate test results, adjusting operations accordingly; coordinate testing and report results with the Department of Ecology.
  • Monitor and operate all plant equipment and make process changes based on collection data analysis and visual inspection; troubleshoot routine processes and make process decisions.
  • Operate plant centrifuge; maintain flow rates and consistency for bio-solids production.
  • Assist in updating logs, compiling charts, and records.
  • Ensure plant effluent meets or exceeds Washington State Department of Ecology permit requirements.
  • Operate and maintain WWTP's Odor Control System.
  • Respond to emergency situations as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of wastewater disposal laws; methods, materials, and tools used in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant.
  • Knowledge of maintenance of secondary sewage treatment plant; treatment plant safety: heating, power, and other related mechanical equipment; and standard types of automatic controls.
  • Knowledge of the machinery used for wastewater treatment and pumping stations.
  • Knowledge of tribal, state, and federal rules governing wastewater discharge and worker's safety.
  • Ability to work independently and to make routine decisions on the operation of the plant processes and equipment during the Lead Operator's absence.
  • Ability to perform and document various tests required by tribal, state, and federal agencies for the operation of a wastewater treatment plant.
  • Ability to perform daily checks of the wastewater treatment process and periodic checks of pump stations.
  • Ability to climb and descend a maximum of 30 rungs to access system pump stations.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to utilize a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus requiring adequate respiratory function.
  • Ability to detect and differentiate colors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must hold and maintain a Washington State Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Group I
  • 1 year of wastewater treatment plan operating experience. This includes routine performance of duties onsite in a WWTP that affect plant performance.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable under the Tribe's insurance policy.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Washington State Class C driver's license.
  • Must be able to perform the physical duties of this position.
  • Must be able to work irregular hours including evenings and weekends and be able to respond to 24 hour on-call duties.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II

$32.36/hour

NATURE OF WORK: This position is responsible for independently performing the full range of Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Operator duties including operating, monitoring, maintaining and trouble-shooting the wastewater treatment facility and processes.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform all aspects of sampling, monitoring, and testing required to maintain compliance with Tribal, State, and Federal regulations governing the wastewater treatment process and plant management.
  • Perform assigned treatment plant rounds; inspect, monitor, troubleshoot, performance test and document plant processes.
  • Operate and adjust treatment plant pumps, motors, feeders, and other equipment to maintain appropriate plant operations.
  • Maintain, compile and update plant operations logs and reports; perform and record mathematical calculations related to plant operational activities.
  • Mix and add treatment chemicals; ensure adequate chemical application according to regulations and guidelines.
  • Inspect sewer lines and services.
  • Perform the installation, maintenance and repair of the physical plant and pump stations and all of their components and subsystems.
  • Perform regular and unscheduled maintenance and repairs on all plant equipment and machinery.
  • Respond to emergency situations as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the operation, methods and procedures of a wastewater treatment plant.
  • Knowledge of the machinery used for wastewater treatment and pumping stations.
  • Knowledge of mechanical equipment and the ability to diagnose and correct equipment malfunction.
  • Knowledge of basic machinery preventative maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of Tribal, State, and Federal rules governing wastewater discharge and worker's safety.
  • Ability to work independently and to make routine decisions on the operation of the plant processes and equipment during the Lead Operator's absence.
  • Ability to perform and document various tests required by Tribal, State, and Federal agencies for the operation of a wastewater treatment plant.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator III

$35.68/hour

NATURE OF WORK: This position is responsible for providing daily leadership and direction for lower level Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Operators. Acts as the On-Site Operator to verify compliance with tribal, state, and federal environmental regulations, policies, procedures and standards.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee the operation of plant equipment and processes related to wastewater treatment systems, including the operation of ancillary facilities and equipment.
  • Monitor wastewater operations to verify treatment plant performance is stable, and in compliance with tribal, state and federal environmental and safety regulations, procedures and standards.
  • Inspect all treatment plant equipment, and assure equipment is functioning within technical parameters.
  • Monitor and evaluate Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) process control systems information; monitor data and error reports, evaluate operational and maintenance issues, and make functional adjustments to treatment components within scope of authority and training.
  • Identify and diagnoses operational problems, discuss scope and attributes of problems with staff and management, and recommend alterations, adjustments, and procedural changes to correct problems and maintain system stability.
  • Oversee treatment chemical and their uses; including making chemical feed adjustments, how to unload, store and uses various chemicals, i.e. sulfuric acid, caustic soda, and chlorine.
  • Act as the treatment plant Onsite Operator, and coordinate the activities of lower level operations staff; respond to operational incidents, and takes command when appropriate.
  • Sample and analyze influents/effluents, source water/product water, feed water and permeate to detect quality variations, interpret results, reading sheets, process test, computerized data and information trends to identify variations in flow and water quality and make appropriate changes.
  • Use a variety of standard testing procedures to determine problems and any adjustments needed in the treatment process.
  • Record operational data, telemetry readings, work logs and other prescribed work documentation.
  • Respond to all emergency situations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Prepare or update written standard operating procedures (SOP), monthly discharge monitoring reports, monthly chlorination reports, and bio-solid reports.
  • Act as the Hazardous Waste Coordinator, ensuring compliance with container and hazardous waste management as the Hazardous Waste Coordinator.
  • Act as the Confined Space Entry Supervisor, ensuring compliance with confined space entry as defined by policy.
  • Responsible for maintaining lab supplies, ordering parts for equipment, filling work orders to have equipment repaired, and keeping stock chemicals and other materials to properly ensure operation of the plant.
  • Knowledge of tribal, state, and federal rules governing wastewater discharge and worker's safety.
  • Ability to work independently and to make routine decisions on the operation of the plant processes and equipment.
  • Ability to perform and document various tests required by tribal, state, and federal agencies for the operation of a wastewater treatment plant.
  • Protocols for industrial chemical usage and storage.
  • Ability to climb and descend a maximum of 30 rungs to access system pump stations.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to utilize a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus requiring adequate respiratory function.
  • Ability to detect and differentiate colors.
  • Responds to all emergency situation as directed.
  • Able to respond to 24 hour on-call duties and weekends as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must hold and maintain Washington State Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Group 3 Certification.
  • 4 years of operating experience including at least 2 years at a class II or higher plant.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable under the Tribe's insurance policy.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Washington State Class C driver's license.
  • Must be able to perform the physical duties of this position.
  • Must be able to work irregular hours including evenings and weekends and be able to respond to 24 hour on-call duties as needed
