Qualified candidates for the CNC Lathe Operator role would be able to reading and understanding blueprints and perform basic programming at the machine as well as use DNC to download programs and upload new programs. This position will use set up sheets to collect and load tools, inspect completed parts using depth micrometers, plug and thread gauges, calipers, surface plate, height gages, etc.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform duties required to set up, operate CNC milling, lathe machines or other CNC equipment and inspect parts
  • Perform set up on CNC lathe, such as: collect required tools, set stops, locate and indicate vises and fixtures, fabricate fixture if one is not available, "zero out" part and tools, install tools into carousel, input run data manually into machine and transfer data to a disk using a CMT or DNC unit or if program has already been made transfer data from disk to machine memory using the CMT or DNC unit, etc.
  • Using blueprints, program information, hand tools, etc.
  • Maintain file of program information and set up sheets, update revisions as required
  • Operate CNC lathe: load material into fixtures or vises, clamp material down, machine material, such as: c'drill, drill, ream, tap, bore, etc.
  • Inspect bored and reamed holes while running, make tool adjustments, unload parts and deburr
  • Edit program information as required
  • Inspect parts with hole and depth micrometers, plug and thread gauges, calipers, surface plate, height gages, etc.
  • Complete quality checks as required
  • Hold tolerance per print
  • Collaborate with foreman and manufacturing engineers to verify and/or change shop routers to facilitate manufacture of parts
  • Assist engineering department by machining prototype parts and evaluate machinability of parts
  • Check and maintain oil levels, add coolant as needed, empty coolant drain pan, clean coolant filters, check chip conveyor operation, maintain area in a clean and orderly fashion, etc.
  • Use surface grinder to modify standard tools for specific parts and applications
  • Operate other machines, including CNC machines, as trained/required
  • Must have setups and first part inspections approved by an CNC Machinist II or III or Cell Lead

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Basic Machine shop knowledge
  • Capable of performing proven setups and first part run with minimal assistance.
  • Familiar with MA general inspection procedures as stated in QWI310-015.
  • Capable of making minimal edits and revision changes to existing programs but not yet proficient at all skills required and may require occasional assistance from team
  • Maintain a safe and organized work environment. Fulfill daily 5 S and required PM duties. Complete these on consistent basis.
  • Must maintain quality parts and low scrap rate which is subject to review by team leaders based on quality issues within cell and/or per IRAD reports.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function of the position.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Degree or Equivalent
  • 2+ years CNC lathe or milling experience or equivalent skills
  • Interact with others.
  • Work in high stress environment.
  • Deal with interpersonal conflicts.
  • Work with difficult customers.
  • Work in an office/manufacturing environment.
  • Coverage during certain periods

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Regularly required to sit, stand, bend, reach, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl and move about facility and/or customer’s facilities. Frequent lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Moderate to frequent exposure to shop environment; may be exposed to dust, odors, oils, fumes, chemicals, noise and moving parts. Work typically requires the usage of PPE and can require work on the facility’s production floor or customer’s production environment.
