JOB TITLE: Treatment Systems Operator III

DEPARTMENT: Leachate Collection

REPORTS TO: Treatment Systems Manager

EFFECTIVE DATE: January 2024

SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for performing any combination of the following tasks to operate the wastewater treatment facilities such as the Leachate Pre-Treatment Facility, pump stations, leachate collection and conveyance systems, Underdrain System, and OU-1 Pump and Treat System under the general supervision of the Treatment System Manager. Operate the facilities to control flow and processing of wastewater and effluent. Observe variations in operating conditions and interpret meter and gauge readings and monitoring results to determine processing requirements. Oversees operations and coordinates activities involving operation, monitoring, and maintenance of wastewater treatment plant systems and related equipment to plant staff to produce effluent discharge in compliance with regulatory permit.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides direction, training, guidance, and assistance to plant staff; coordinates daily work orders/activities, organizes, prioritizes, assigns work, monitors status of completed work, and troubleshoots problem situations.
  • Monitor facility operations by observation, lab data review, and reading instrumentation (SCADA) to ensure compliant and efficient operations.
  • Maintain accurate/comprehensive operation and maintenance records of work performed.
  • Ensures preventative maintenance on and inspection of equipment and assist as needed.
  • Ensures the operation and maintenance of all equipment necessary for proper operation of the treatment plant, pump stations, and other systems as designed.
  • Coordinate with plant staff to receive shipments, monitor unloading processes, record into inventory, and check shipment documents for compliance to standard.
  • Assist in the lab as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in operating and maintaining wastewater treatment facilities and pumping stations.
  • Must possess a valid Rhode Island Wastewater Operators License Grade 2 or higher or a Water Treatment Plant Operators License Grade 2 or higher.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of mechanical/scientific processes, equipment, operations, and maintenance of wastewater treatment systems including the layout, location and equipment characteristics.
  • General knowledge of state and federal environmental regulations as well terminology, codes, symbols, and standard abbreviations.
  • Familiarity with wastewater treatment sampling, chemical handling, and plumbing/electrical systems.
  • Proficiency in safety procedures when performing work in order to prevent risk and accidents.
  • Skilled in use of power tools as well as electrical, electronic, pneumatic and mechanical repairs.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Access as well as training assistance and operator level use of SCADA and JobCal systems.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Strong verbal, written, and listening skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, stand for prolonged periods of time, physical stamina and endurance, manual dexterity, and mechanical aptitude.
  • Frequently exposed to wet and/or humid, extreme heat or cold conditions.
  • Frequently works near moving mechanical parts and in dangerous places.
  • Frequently works around fumes, airborne particles, or toxic chemicals.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
