Drew University seeks applications for a part-time Learning Support Specialist in the Office of Accessibility Resources (OAR), which collaborates with students, faculty, and staff to advance access within the campus community and to promote the mission of the University in providing a challenging and individualized education for its diverse community of learners. The specialist will provide direct services, including case management, academic coaching, and advocacy, for students with disabilities who are enrolled in the Drew Learning Support Program (DLSP). The DLSP program is designed to provide ancillary support that emphasizes academic skills, personal responsibility, self-advocacy, independence, development of self-help skills and personal reflection.

This is a part-time, 9-month, in-person position reporting to the Director of Accessibility Resources.

The Support Specialist's responsibilities include:

1. Maintain a caseload of students enrolled in DLSP program:

a. Delivering direct instruction in learning strategies, study skills and adaptive technology to students enrolled in the program during weekly meetings.

b. Assist students in locating and utilizing resources/services on campus, including but not limited to academic resources through the Center for Academic Excellence,

the Counseling Center and Health Services.

c. Communicate with faculty, staff and parents about the individual needs, goals and progress of the students. Work collaboratively and creatively with faculty to ensure that

students are being appropriately accommodated and supported in the classroom.

d. Monitor student progress and assist students with academic advising in collaboration with their academic advisor.

2. Assist the OAR Director with the planning and implementation of the DLSP.

3. Create and implement workshops for students to address needs and enhance opportunities for success.

4. Maintain records, database information and provide reports regarding meeting attendance, resource utilization, and academic progress

5. Assist with recruitment for the DLSP by attending Open Houses and other events promoting the DLSP program.

6. Engage in professional development in disability related areas.

7. Serves as a collaborative member of the OAR, participating in weekly staff meetings and collaborating with other campus offices that provide student support.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree

Preferred: Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Special Education, Social Work, Rehabilitation or related field. 1-3 years in an educational setting working with persons with disabilities.

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Qualities:

  1. Experience working with young adults with disabilities and/or students with developmental/ executive functioning needs

  2. Experience with academic coaching models to support time management, organization, study and test taking skills.

  3. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish rapport with students, faculty and staff.

  4. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  5. Proficiency with Google suite programs.

  6. Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

  7. Flexible schedule to accommodate occasional evening and/or weekend programming.
