Los Angeles, United States Movement Innovation Collaborative Full time
Job DescriptionJob Description

We are searching for an experienced and nimble Deputy Director of Programs to support a rapidly growing and complex organization in a startup environment.

The Movement Innovation Collaborative (MIC) is a new entity that will deepen and expand the capacity, impact, and sustainability of California's grassroots movements for racial justice and social transformation. MIC will support changemakers and organizations to catalyze innovations in movement strategy and power building, intergenerational leadership development, and our collective long-term sustainability and resiliency. Through a network of physical and virtual "centers," MIC will also contribute a key piece of infrastructure needed to fuel transformative structural change across California. This network will consist of new and existing centers serving hundreds of organizations and tens of thousands of grassroots leaders in California. We aspire to raise the necessary resources to fuel the mission, vision, and programs of MIC.

The Movement Innovation Collaborative is focusing on three core strategies to deepen the power, coordination, and impact of the sector. In all three areas, we will create program and infrastructure supports that are additive and synergistic with existing movement efforts rather than duplicative.

  • Movement Strategy and Innovation
  • Intergenerational Leadership Development
  • Healing Justice and Sustainable Work Culture

This is a key leadership function with the primary responsibility being the high-quality design, implementation and growth of all programs and activities. The DDP is an inspiring, strategic and results-oriented leader with strong management, analytical skills and a depth of experience to ensure progress of MIC’s mission and vision.  In this phase of MIC, we also envision the DDP to have a more hands-on role with keen attention to detail, ability to juggle administrative tasks, and a proven track record in building and motivating teams.

POSITION DIMENSIONS:

Strategic Partnership and Planning
  • Serve as a strategic partner to the Co-Directors and senior program team staff in the iterative design, implementation, management of all programs
  • Ensure alignment across MIC’s core program strategies with MIC’s mission and vision
  • Set and evaluate comprehensive goals and outcomes for MIC’s performance and growth, in collaboration with MIC’s leadership team and Leadership Council
  • Continue to define and refine MIC’s role in the broader ecosystem and the alignment of programs and outcomes with this role
  • Develop program innovations through a blend of proven practices, research and evaluation and experimentation with innovative approaches.
  • Provide strong cross functional partnership for fundraising, operations, and talent management to promote organizational resilience, continuous improvement and performance management.
Program Oversight, Implementation and Leadership
  • Oversee implementation of MIC’s program strategy with fidelity; in collaboration, define challenges or problems and objectives, recognize viable alternatives and formulate solutions, with understanding and clear communication of inherent tradeoffs of decisions.
  • Translate strategy into operating plans and outcomes for Program Team and other key staff
  • Lead development of workstreams and plans to guide implementation and goal-setting of strategy and systems to achieve outcomes across all program components
  • Cultivate and nurture relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Develop partnerships critical to the success of program components, advancement of vision, and creation of new program content
  • Model and operationalize a culture of humility and healing, collaboration and partnership, accountability, and listening and learning.
  • Effectively steward resources through cost analysis, budget development and oversight.
    • Lead the Program Team in building their annual budget with ongoing collaboration with the Finance team to review budget to actuals to ensure that program expenses and expenditures stay within the allocated budget.
  • Develop systems and processes to document program progress, successes and challenges
  • Co-lead program assessments and evaluation
  • Develop and manage consultant agreements as needed, including but not limited to: developing scope of work, managing expenses, and serving as a liaison between consultants and MIC
Team Management
  • Manage MIC’s Program Team by providing direct supervision, guidance, and mentorship of Program staff
  • Create opportunities for team members’ leadership and professional development; empower team to take ownership of strategic goals
  • Build a culture of learning and innovation by supporting the team and leadership in leveraging qualitative and quantitative information and research to inform strategy, refine programs, and achieve measurable outcomes
  • Ensure Program team members are supported, valued, appreciated and motivated to advance MIC’s mission.
  • Oversee Program team meetings and collaboration & communicate across departments on a regular basis to prevent siloed approaches to the work.
  • Co-develop performance goals and plans with direct reports and conduct reviews in accordance with organizational policies
  • Collaborate with the Deputy Director of Organizational Resilience (final title tbd) to attract, hire and onboard, coach, and retain highly engaged and impactful team members, ensuring their development in professional competencies, level of responsibility, program priorities, and performance
  • Be a supportive and empathetic leader with the ability to provide constructive feedback to empower staff
  • Model and foster open dialogue and mutual respect, transparency, accountability and self-reflection
Who You Are:
While no one person will embody all of the qualities described below, the ideal candidate will possess many of the following professional and personal abilities, attributes, and experiences:
  • A strong alignment with the MIC's mission, values and culture.
  • Combination of related training and progressive program management and leadership experience in social sector organizations for a minimum of ten years
  • Execution strength: demonstrated achievement in moving from strategy to action

  • Strategic leadership abilities, and the ability to link the development of people with achievement of organizational outcomes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to effectively present information to diverse audiences (MIC staff,  Board of Directors and Advisors, funders, etc.)
  • Exceptional project management and planning skills
  • Excellent computer skills (Google Apps, Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.); willingness to learn additional applications and accessible technology as necessary.
