Because of our impact and outcomes, Franklin Cummings Tech recently received the largest gift in its history: $12.5 million from the Cummings Foundation to continue to advance its leading-edge work in creating technical career pathways for students typically underrepresented in post-secondary education.

In FY22, Franklin Cummings Tech was the academic home to almost 900 learners. Half of those learners were students enrolled in traditional credit-bearing programs. The balance enrolled in a combination of continuing education and contract education programs. In the coming years, the College seeks to boost the number of students in credit-bearing courses, while also expanding continuing education and contract education so that we are educating more than 1,000 learners a year by FY25.

Note: this position is to teach a college-level course to advanced high school students at a high school campus in Dorchester.


Key Responsibilities:


• Meet all scheduled classes on the assigned day/time

• Regularly hold three office hours per week, online format is acceptable

• Notify Program Chair of any absences from scheduled classes and providing instructional materials and directions to ensure consistent and sequential classroom instruction (note: absences should be rare and unavoidable)

• Participate in departmental curriculum development, and review and update course curricula when possible

• Demonstrate committed participation in student learning outcome assessment and college-wide initiatives, including data collection, analysis, curriculum changes, and goal setting

• Use of course texts, outlines, and other curriculum materials in accordance with college and department policies. When an established syllabus is provided and the course is a prerequisite for other courses, any significant deviations must be approved by the department chair.

• Respond to the chair and administrative requests in a timely manner and complete all responsibilities effectively; prompt in keeping appointments, attending meetings (when possible), and beginning classes

• Respond to students in a timely manner

• Evaluate student achievement and provide feedback timely while maintaining accurate student records in the Canvas Learning Management System

• Complete the online “Growing with Canvas for Adjuncts” course before the term begins

• Provide adequate support to students and maintain a respectful, professional rapport

• Participate in communications with the college and department. This includes utilizing the college Dropout Detective Retention Solution warning system to alert advisors when students falter.

• Demonstrate effective teaching including preparation, meeting course goals, organization, and presentation of material, student involvement, and classroom management

• Collaborate with other college departments (academic, student affairs, enrollment, and development) for the mutual benefit of all departments.

• Maintain a culture of accountability and innovation; maintain the college policies and procedures, as outlined in the course catalog, employee and student handbooks


Required Credentials and Experience include:


· Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in an appropriate field such as molecular biology, biochemistry, or related biotechnology fields. exceptions can be made for those who have extensive biotechnology industry experience.

· Demonstrable knowledge and experience in areas relevant to departmental curricula.

· A collaborative and inclusive style.

· Demonstrated success with teaching at the high school level or an express interest in working with students of this age and experience with students of this age (for example, coaching).


Course Description for BI110 Molecular Biology in Biotechnology


This course will develop the fundamental understanding of cell biology and biochemistry that will be the underlying basis for working in the biotechnology industry. This course will the cellular basis of medicine and how cells function as well as the chemistry of biological molecules. This course will also examine the critical role of water in biological processes, introduce enzymology and the role of enzymes in living systems, as well as antibodies and the immune system. The course will demonstrate the molecular processes underlying cellular and physiological function in health and disease.


Additional Information


This course will be taught at a high school in Dorchester to advanced high school students. It will follow the college course that is taught at the college exactly so the curriculum and all slides will be provided prior to the beginning of the school year. The faculty member is free to teach each subject in the manner they wish, but they must cover all of the subjects to the same level as the main course is taught in order to prepare the high school students for the next level of the program when they join the college.
