Journalism can have the biggest impact at the community level, especially in more rural areas like East Texas. We are looking for a reporter who can help us cover people, cities and current issues in the Marshall, Kilgore, and Carthage areas. This person will also serve as the Saturday editor.


The majority of this job will be reporting daily news and longer-term feature and enterprise stories in coordination with the rest of our staff across three newsrooms -- but especially in Marshall and Kilgore. This person will work closely with the regional editor and, aside from their regular Saturday editor shift, will lead our newsrooms whenever the regional editor is on vacation. This job has a Tuesday through Saturday workweek.


Responsibilities include:

  • Writing two stories a day from your beat or from assigned features for our special sections or magazines.
  • Taking or coordinating photography and video for your stories.
  • Serving as Saturday editor, which includes overseeing the day's assignments, editing reporters' stories, working with page designers and proofing final pages.
  • Collaborating with other reporters across our newsrooms on enterprise investigations.

Requirements:

Relevant skills include:

  • Strong reporting and writing skills, with a focus on hard news.
  • Filing and editing clean, accurate copy on deadline.
  • Familiarity or willingness to learn photography, Photoshop and InDesign.
  • The ability to work well with others under the pressures of deadlines.

Other requirements:

  • Previous reporting experience is preferred.
  • Candidates must have their own car and be able to drive. This job's beat spans three different cities in the East Texas area.
