Position: Education Champion - Queens NY

Empowering Urban Education
Do you love kids and have a passion for education? Do you want more meaning from your next job? Do our core values of Strive for Excellence, Act Entrepreneurially, Be a Conscious Capitalist, and Empower Revolutionary Change resonate with you? Join us in our mission to disrupt the education status quo and create a more inclusive and equitable education system that serves our country’s most deserving students. As an Education Champion, you'll be part of a supportive community, dedicated to inspiring change and positively impacting urban students' lives. Your commitment to our mission and flexibility in partnering with schools will play a crucial role in advancing education equity and closing the opportunity gap for low-income, urban students.

Organization Overview:

We are a mission-driven company working towards a world where No Child’s Circumstance Limits Their Potential. Our innovative approach brings together dedicated Education Champions, teachers, school leaders, and parents to create a supportive and nurturing learning environment. By reimagining what's possible for our students, we believe that every child can reach their full potential, regardless of their circumstance or zip code.

Responsibilities:

As an Education Champion, you will work collaboratively with teachers and school leaders to provide the targeted support and interventions students need on any given day. You'll be assigned to small group instruction and one-on-one tutoring, focusing on areas such as Math, Reading, and Writing. Your role will be instrumental in ensuring students have the rigorous and culturally responsive educational support they deserve.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instructional Leadership:
    • Provide small group instruction and one-on-one tutoring to support student learning gains.
    • Collaborate with teachers and school leaders to develop data-driven mission and vision for school improvement.
    • Be a compassionate mentor, fostering high expectations for students and addressing their academic and personal needs.
  • Learning and Professional Development:
    • Continuously improve your teaching effectiveness through reflection and professional development opportunities.
    • Ensure equitable access to effective support, challenging learning opportunities, and educational resources.
    • Communicate your work effectively to teachers and staff, supporting their efforts in the classroom.
  • School Culture:
    • Foster a professional culture of engagement and commitment to the education of the whole child.
    • Uphold norms of respect, caring, learning, and safety while promoting a culturally responsive environment.
    • Encourage staff-to-student relationships and promote student voice, agency, and leadership.
  • Management:
    • Collaborate with school staff to ensure smooth student progression through their academic journey.
    • Build positive relationships with students, staff, and other stakeholders to impact school operations.
    • Promote staff wellness best practices, including work-life balance.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a degree-seeking student or graduate in Education or a relevant subject area (Math, Engineering, Social Science, English, Hard Sciences, etc.).
  • Ability to commit to working 10-35 hours at an assigned school site.
  • Willingness to participate in 1-2 hours of monthly professional development and training
  • Dedication to supporting academic and personal success, particularly among minority and low-income students.
  • Passion for educational equity and social justice.
  • Availability to serve as an Education Champion during relevant months of the school year.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Competitive pay rate of $22 to $26 per hour.
  • Education Champions are not paid during school breaks (Winter Break, Spring Break, etc.).
  • Education Champions will be required to attend one 30-minute event per quarter and complete 5 minutes of asynchronous training per week.

Acknowledgment:

PRACTICE partners with some of New York City's most struggling public schools to improve academic outcomes for low-income students and their families. Flexibility is required, as there may be occasions when a school recognizes a more pressing need for your time and talents than originally anticipated. You may be asked to teach a different grade or subject. Our team expects you to be flexible and committed to furthering our mission of advancing equitable education for urban students by closing the opportunity gap.
