Senior Engineering Manager, Retail Web

Boston, United States Square Full time
Job DescriptionJob DescriptionCompany Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality through Afterpay, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

Job Description

The Web organization delivers compelling experiences via browser to millions of businesses using Square today, and millions more considering it. Managing a business and selling online can be complex, and we’ve committed to tackling that complexity on behalf of our sellers, to give time back.

From the cozy local wine store to the trendy sneaker pop-up, Square supports Retail sellers by finding new ways to equip them and their staff with the tools they need to succeed. Our team focuses on helping smaller retailers meet their customers wherever they are: be that in-store, online, or on social/messaging platforms. We’re addressing the desire for clean and minimalist store counters with intuitive yet sophisticated iOS, Android, and Web-based software that integrates seamlessly with our sleek hardware, all backed by highly reliable services.

As a Senior Engineering Manager for the Retail Web team, you will lead the team that builds core experiences for Retail sellers. You’ll work cross-platform with Mobile and Backend engineering teams to design, build and ship features across our Point of Sale clients on iOS and Android, our seller facing tools on the web, and our backend platforms.  You'll work cross functionally with Product and Design to build features that present elegant UI for complex problems, saving sellers time and reducing anxiety as they strive to succeed.

You will:

  • Lead your team in creating beautiful, unique web products which allow retail sellers to manage increasingly complex business operations while also expanding our product internationally into new markets

  • Cultivate an excellent organization by applying your technical expertise to maintain a high bar, hiring remarkable talent, coaching your team, and fostering principled and collaborative engineering decision-making

  • Oversee the success of your teams' products, establish and achieve quantifiable results

  • Participate in essential technical, design, and product discussions with leaders across our product, engineering, data, and design teams

  • Be responsible for the web experience of Retail sellers who use Square

Qualifications

  • 12+ years of relevant industry experience and a BA/BS degree in Computer Science or equivalent

  • 10+ years of experience building for the Web (inclusive of managing teams that build for the Web)

  • 4+ years of experience managing engineers

  • Experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, and working in modern web frameworks (specifically including React), both as an individual contributor and manager

  • A strong understanding of product and design principles and experience working closely with peers in Product and Design

  • Experience with backend technologies (NodeJS, Java), front-end build tools (Webpack, ESbuild, Vite), as well as micro front-end architecture

  • Proven track record of successfully delivering product features spanning multiple teams from start to finish with strong cross-functional collaboration, communication, and ownership
