New York Common Pantry is one of the city’s largest food pantries, providing food assistance, case management services, senior food provision, nutrition education, and hygiene services. We are a dynamic, mission-driven organization, experiencing rapid growth and expansion at this time.

NYCP is a poverty-fighting organization that reduces hunger and promotes dignity, health, and self-sufficiency by using a holistic approach to reach over 104,000 distinct people--over 660,000 visitors each year. Last year, we served almost 10.2 million meals. Through an array of programs that we offer, we look to establish long-term stability for those we serve.

The Staff Accountant will be responsible for a variety of general accounting duties including account reconciliation, account analysis, journal entries, petty cash management, and bank reconciliation. Additionally, this role will oversee the bi-weekly payroll process, which includes preparation and ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations.

The Staff Accountant will report to the Director of Accounting at the 8 East 109th, New York, NY 10029 location. The schedule for this position is Monday through Friday: 9 am - 5 pm; 1-hour lunch. This is a Full-Time position, 35 hours a week, non-exempt.

Responsibilities:


General Accounting:

  • Perform account reconciliations and ensure the accuracy of financial data.

  • Conduct account analysis to identify discrepancies and resolve issues.

  • Prepare and post journal entries accurately and timely.

  • Manage petty cash transactions and ensure proper documentation and reconciliation.

  • Perform bank reconciliations and resolve any discrepancies promptly.

  • Assist with various other general accounting duties as assigned.

  • Participate in special projects as needed, providing accounting support and expertise.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned.


Payroll Administration:

  • Prepare and process bi-weekly payroll for all employees, ensuring accuracy and compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.

  • Maintain and update payroll records.

  • Respond to payroll-related inquiries from employees and resolve issues in a timely manner.

  • Ensure proper documentation and filing of payroll records.

  • Stay current with changes in payroll laws and regulations and implement necessary updates.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in general accounting and payroll administration is required.

  • Full professional proficiency level in accounting software and payroll systems.

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and payroll regulations.

  • Commitment to helping the communities in need and NYCP’s work and mission.

  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.

  • Proficient with Google Drive and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
