This person reports administratively and functionally to the Sales and Marketing Manager. However, this role will work heavily in conjunction with the Engineering Department. 

Sales Application Engineers are the primary technical resource for the outside sales force and are responsible for actively driving and managing the technology evaluation stage of the sales process. Working with the sales team as the key technical advisor and product advocate, the SAE must be able to identify and provide reliable solutions for all technical issues to ensure complete customer satisfaction through all stages of the sales process.  The SAE must be able to establish and maintain strong relationships throughout the sales cycle. 

REQUIREMENTS & CONDITIONS

  • Education: Mechanical, Engineering Technology, or Fluid Power Engineering Degree required.
  • Experience: 5+ years fluid power design preferred.
  • Skills, Knowledge, Abilities: Knowledge of mechanical and electrical design concepts and manufacturing processes, organize and execute multiple projects concurrently, and will utilize and manage outside resources to aid in completion of quotations on time, Proficient in MS Word, MS Excel and AutoCAD.

  • Physical Requirements: Long hours sitting and using office equipment and computers. Some light lifting of supplies and materials from time to time may be required.
  • Working Conditions/Environment: A busy office environment. Several projects may be managed at one time with frequent interruptions to meet the needs and requests of internal personnel and customers.  Substantial travel required within CFI’s areas of operation.




RESPONSIBILITIES AND JOB DUTIES

Responsibilities:

  • Assess customer needs: Compile information from the customer. Evaluate and determine what the customer needs and wants.  Assess system performance and identify areas for improvement/enhancement.  Present products to customers in conjunction with the Outside Sales Representative.
  • Specify products/Design solutions: Work towards a solution to customer issue(s). Make product selections, suggestions, and recommendations. Evaluate the design parameters for the component or system and engineer systems within customer’s guidelines.
  • Determine costs and create complete proposals: Present and recommend a system proposal and quotes including quote documentation, structured cost breakdowns, drawings, sketches and other supporting engineering documentation, using existing company tools and processes.
  • Service customers via telephone: Resolve customer technical issues. Work with sales representatives to resolve customer technical issues
  • Service customers on site: Provide engineering assistance. Train customers on correct use of products. Provide start-up, commissioning, maintenance and troubleshooting assistance when needed.
  • Promote technical sales: Encourage the sale of power units, systems, and technical applications.  Educate and train sales team members, inside and outside.  A key metric for this role is the increase in specific manufacturer sales quarter over quarter, and annually.  Increasing the closing rate and volume of engineer systems and projects will be measured as part of job performance.
  • Design Request Forms (DRFs): Review all submitted DRFs to ensure required information is present, and serve as the “go between” for engineering and outside sales. This will require a solid ability to clearly and plainly communicate in technical language.
  • Technical “Line of Defense”: Field technical requests from outside sales/customers to reduce the need for involving the engineering department.
  • Non-Engineered Assemblies: Design basic systems and non-engineered assembly (NEA) requests from outside sales.
  • Develop technical drawings: Use AutoCAD software to create drawings.
  • Manage products and supplier relationships: Support specific product lines for given areas of primary responsibility.
  • Evaluate industry trends and new technology: Attend training, and meetings.
  • Mentoring: Must be available to mentor others within the organization on all aspects of management, sales, and system design.
  • Protect the company’s IP: All external correspondence must be truthful in nature but must also protect the company’s IP and profit from being poached by others. 
  • Additional responsibilities may include being the company’s technical and commercial liaison between represented products/manufacturers and the company. Manager of more technical activities such as technical services, either in-house or in the field, being a commercial fill in for territory managers for instances of PTO, shear volume, and expanding territories.
  • Training: One of the first and primary roles for this position is training.  This person will train all inside and outside sales to raise the level of technical expertise.  Successful completion of training means that every person in these departments is subject matter experts and product champions, self-sustaining, and require minimal technical assistance with regards to the product groups they are trained (e.g. Hy-Pro, Moog, etc.).

 

Duties:

  • Maintain expert level of product knowledge and application.
  • Articulate technology and product positioning to both business and technical users.
  • Provide design and specification development support to consultants, integrators, and end users.
  • Listen, understand, and convey customer requirements.
  • Perform technical/ product training for salespeople, estimators, and engineers at targeted accounts.
  • Assist in the design and development of new products and tools necessary to make target accounts comfortable and successful at automation solutions
  • Maintain accurate records of target accounts, opportunities, quotes, projects, contacts, and correspondence in company approved databases
  • Travel to project sites to perform start-up, integration, and training services.


Additional Duties:

  • Work for and assist the Engineering Department with work overload as a back-up engineer or offer additional engineering support as the workload demands.
  • Resolve customer issues or difficulties in a manner that is consistent with the company mission, core values, and financial objectives.
  • Maintain professional business relationships within target accounts.
  • Provide status of ongoing projects and future projects.
  • Identify customer's needs and sales opportunities to help future growth

 

Administrative/General:

  • Assist in development, review, and maintenance of processes, procedures, and guidelines
  • Report and communicate with Outside and Inside Sales Managers/Supervisors pertinent information regarding Customer information and status
  • Create and archive BOM’s and project documents in accordance with ISO and CFI standards
  • Serve as a back-up for critical processes such as creating quotes in the EPR system, document control, part number set-up and research, and any other ERP processes or procedures.
