Salt Lake City, United States Deseret Digital Media Full time
Job DescriptionJob Description

Our company is committed to being trusted voices of light and truth reaching hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

At Deseret Digital Media (DDM), we’re on the lookout for someone who is primarily frontend-focused but also has a knack for backend development, bringing a well-rounded skill set to our team. While this is a fully-remote position, candidates must reside in either Utah or Idaho.

What you’ll do:

We’re a small multidisciplinary team and you’d have a wide variety of responsibilities, including:

  • Build, maintain, and document new features for projects like KSL.com, as well as a variety of internal tools.

  • Collaborate with product managers, graphic designers, software engineers, and QA engineers to prioritize and develop features.

What you can expect:

We follow the Shape Up methodology, so you’ll work in focused six-week cycles, giving you the space to innovate and refine your work. You’ll enjoy the variety and challenge of both maintaining existing systems and creating new solutions. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to shape and submit your own project ideas for consideration, allowing you to directly influence our product’s direction and make a significant impact.

Your First 7 Days:
  • Onboarding: Get set up with all necessary tools and access to our systems.

  • Meet the Team: Introduce yourself to your new colleagues and understand our team dynamics.

  • Project Overview: Familiarize yourself with our current projects and workflows, and begin understanding the specifics of KSL.com and our internal tools.

  • Initial Training: Start with initial training sessions to get you up to speed on our technologies, Shape Up methodology, and company processes.

Your First 30 Days:
  • Begin Contributing: Start working on smaller tasks and bugs to get hands-on experience with our codebase.

  • Pair Programming: Engage in pair programming sessions with team members to learn our coding standards and practices.

  • Shape Up Cycle: Participate in your first Shape Up cycle, contributing to project planning and execution.

  • Feedback and Support: Regular check-ins with your manager to ensure you’re settling in well and to address any roadblocks.

Your First 90 Days:
  • Lead a Project: Take the lead on a small project or feature development, from planning to execution.

  • Submit Ideas: Shape and submit your own project ideas for consideration in upcoming cycles.

  • Code Reviews: Participate in code reviews, both giving and receiving feedback to improve code quality.

  • Career Development: Work with your manager on your career development plan, identifying goals and opportunities for growth.

  • Full Integration: By now, you should feel fully integrated into the team, comfortable with our workflows, and actively contributing to our projects’ success.

What you’ll bring:

On the technology side, you’ll be a great fit if you have experience in these areas:

  • TypeScript — Some of our projects are already in TypeScript, and we always use it for new front-end projects.

  • React — This is definitely where we spend most of our time, however, if you have familiarity with Vue or Svelte, please still apply We look for great engineers and don’t focus too much on specific libraries.

  • Tailwind CSS — We use this quite a bit here, but much of our older code uses SASS/Vanilla CSS

If you have experience with other styling methods (Emotion, Styled Components, etc.), that’s great

  • Git — We love semantic and detailed commits, and we hope you do too

  • GraphQL — While you won’t be writing the APIs immediately, we are looking for someone who is eager to take on that responsibility in the future.

  • CI/CD — We use Github, so having some knowledge around Github Actions will come in handy.

  • Testing Frameworks (bonus) — Jest, Testing Library, Playwright, etc.

  • PHP/Go (bonus) — Older codebases you’ll work with use PHP (Symfony), and newer codebases use Go. It’s not a requirement, but having a basic understanding of the backend would be great.

On the personal side, you’ll be a great fit if these sound like you:

  • You have a desire to learn and share new and emerging technologies — If new technologies excite you and you love to learn, you’ll fit right in with us at DDM. One of the best things about working here is that if you discover a new technology you want to try and can justify its use case, there’s a good chance you’ll get to implement it

  • You like working with others — We love to pair-program and work with other disciplines closely.

  • You’re goal-oriented and driven — While we don’t expect you to “live and breathe” code, having a growth mindset and being willing to learn from mistakes will help you fit right in.

  • You’re energized by unfamiliar territory — You enjoy the challenge of diving into a new codebase and troubleshooting complex problems.

  • You’re good at breaking down projects — You’ve got good instincts for what to work on first, what’s safe to save for later, and how to get to a working demo as fast as possible.

Why DDM?

In addition to all the standard things that happen to be great at DDM (like competitive wages, opportunity for growth and advancement, stability, and super benefits)…

  • We care about our contribution to the world. We not only care about the health of the business, we care about our impact on other humans. It's right in our mission statement – more than once.

  • We take work/life balance seriously. No, really. We do. Life happens Kids are sick? Take care of them. Need to pick someone up from the airport? No problem.

  • Exceptional benefits, contributing 401(k) and retirement plan.

  • Our company follows a hybrid work model, meaning we’ll still meet in-person occasionally for team meetings, client meetings, and fun events. That means you’ll need to live in Utah/Idaho to be eligible to work for us.

Our Values (A.C.T.)

Our values are more than just a poster on the wall. We believe in these. We hope they ring true for you as well.

  • AGILITY — Our teams innovate rapidly and strategically in an ever-changing market. We develop and grow together.

  • COMMUNITY — We are passionate about delivering customer-centric products that make positive impacts in our communities. Every employee is actively involved in growing our audience.

  • TENACITY — We are determined to improve our results and increase efficiency. Individuals speak up, lead out and make decisions.

This job is a great opportunity for a performance-driven, detail-oriented individual interested in a dynamic and growing organization. If you are motivated by the organization’s broader mission and be able to develop relationships with all members of the team, apply
