PURPOSE AND QUALIFICATIONS

This opportunity calls for an organized, detail-oriented, tech savvy and creative self-starter who is passionate about creating meaningful insights about regional economic conditions and agenda priorities including downtown Pittsburgh’s revitalization, inclusive growth, federal investments, and thought leadership.

The strategy and research (S&R) intern would work closely with the team to automate routine data extraction, manipulation and analysis that the S&R team conducts to streamline research processes. This requires some basic knowledge of python for data extraction and either R or Stata for further data processing, which may require familiarity with leveraging existing data analysis codes on stackoverflow or github.

This position offers an opportunity to apply and expand the candidate’s current coding skills, while learning about the state of SWPA’s economic development, engaging with business and public leaders, and help find relevant sustainable solutions to SWPA’s challenges.

Requirements:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Collaborate on streamlining analytical processes by writing scripts that produce the necessary tables and charts used in ACCD’s routine economic reports

• Support the S&R team in completing research requests by updating, assembling and analyzing occupational, economic, educational, demographic, and business information

• Monitor and disseminate regional business issues and news of interest to inform regional business context/environment

• Balance multiple priorities, working independently or participating as part of a cross-functional team, keeping others informed through clear written and verbal communication, while maintaining a high level of productivity and quality while meeting deadlines

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Education: Current university student pursuing a degree in economics, statistics, public policy or a related field

Knowledge: Candidate should have interest in areas such as data science, research, statistics and economic and community development issues

Experience: Courses or projects involving economic/community research and federal databases or use of statistical software

Skills: Querying databases using APIs
Statistical analysis
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Excellent organizational, planning, problem-solving, quantitative, and project management skills.
Proficient in MS Office suite. Data visualization/data science and statistical programming language skills such as R or Python

JOB SUMMARY

This part time position (approximately 20 to 25 hours a week) will begin August/September 2024 and last through December, with possible extensions through the spring and summer 2025. The pay per hour is $15.00. Work can be scheduled around classes, although they must be during standard business hours. The ACCD maintains a physical office in downtown Pittsburgh, though work may be conducted remotely.
