General Position Summary:

Brother Wolf Animal Rescue operates a Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic to provide low cost high quality spay and neuter surgeries to under-resourced animal owners and shelters in Western North Carolina. We are seeking an enthusiastic veterinary assistant to support this life saving work through the implementation of their animal medicine skills and knowledge.

This position is responsible for assisting the veterinarian with all aspects of surgery conducted on the mobile clinic, including preparing animals for surgery, anesthetic induction, administering vaccines and medications, monitoring recovery, maintaining the cleanliness of the clinic, and client communication. This position is an integral part of a program helping to reduce pet homelessness in Western North Carolina and providing affordable spay/neuter and vaccinations to families for their pets. The person in this position will also be cross-trained in our shelter medical department and will occasionally be expected to assist with the care of animals in our Adoption Center.

Availability: The Brother Wolf mobile spay and neuter clinic operates four days a week to conduct high volume spay and neuter. The Surgical Veterinary Assistant must be available in accordance with the clinic schedule. The person in this position will work four ten-hour days each week on a Monday-Thursday schedule. Early mornings and some evenings may be required on these days.

Essential Function/Major Responsibilities:

  • Assist with overseeing all aspects of assigned patients, including (but not limited to):intake, physical examination; surgical prep; pre- and post-operative care; anesthetic induction and monitoring; recovery; and emergency response.
  • Assist with managing the flow of animals through surgery to ensure efficient operation of the clinic
  • Administers oral, topical, and subcutaneous medications as needed
  • Conducts cleaning and sanitizing as necessary throughout the day
  • Assists with inputting medical notes into a computer system and preparing post-operative paperwork
  • Liaisons with the public to admit and discharge animals and convey after care instructions.
  • Participates in relationships with community veterinarians, veterinary hospitals, and professional associations as requested
  • Ability to drive 26' mobile clinic to locations and assist with daily set up.
  • Responds to medical issues involving patients as necessary
  • Communicates any issues concerning staff or patients with Mobile Clinic Program Director
  • Fills in for other areas and performing other tasks/functions as needed
  • Treats all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance.
  • Always maintains a friendly demeanor and provides excellent customer service to humans and animals; contributes to an understanding and judgment-free clinic environment.
  • Promotes a humane and caring attitude towards all animals

Qualifications:

  • 2 years of prior experience working with animals is preferred, shelter or veterinary clinic experience is a plus. Candidates with previous experience assisting with surgery in a veterinary clinic are strongly encouraged to apply
  • Experience caring for and handling animals in a safe and effective manner, especially large or untrained animals
  • Familiarity with diseases common to dogs and cats
  • For vehicle insurance purposes, candidates must be at least 26 years of age and have a valid driver's license with no moving violations within the past three years for vehicle insurance purposes.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, customer service, and time management skills essential.
  • Genuine affection for animals, concern for their welfare, and a willingness to accommodate animals in the workplace.
  • Ability and initiative, working with minimal supervision and direction.
  • Maturity, excellent judgment, and a professional, personal appearance.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand English is required.
  • Understand, agree with, and live the Brother Wolf mission, core values, and vision.
  • Familiarity with companion animals, knowledge of their behavior or experience working with or volunteering with a rescue group, humane society, foster care involvement, or other animal welfare agency is a plus.
  • Comfort and ability to work with animals of unknown disposition and those who exhibit medical and other problems, as well as aggressive tendencies.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical ability to walk and or stand on your feet throughout a normal workday required. Ability to bend and squat.
  • Physical ability to engage in repetitive motions of legs, arms, and hands and to hear and see clearly.
  • Physical ability to push up to 150lbs and to carry up to 50lbs regularly and independently throughout a regular workday required.
  • Allergic conditions, which may be aggravated when handling or working with animals, may be a disqualification.

Working conditions:

Conditions may include working alone, working inside or outside during varying weather conditions, frequent interruptions, and some evenings/weekends meetings and classes.

Potential environmental factors include:

  • Exposure to chemical and biological hazards, such as feces and blood
  • Exposure to sharp objects
  • Working in environments that include loud noises
  • Working in environments that may have uneven, wet, and slippery surfaces
