Chattanooga, United States Steam Logistics Full time
Job DescriptionJob Description

Our Story

Steam Logistics was founded in 2012 to tackle the most strategic challenge many companies face: how to align the supply chain so goods move efficiently, quickly, and economically. As a full-service provider, we offer end-to-end services to help our customers move commodities around the world, from their origin point to their final destination. We’ve rethought the brokerage paradigm and are innovation leaders in our space, looking for the right people to join us as we scale. We are extraordinarily proud of the company we’ve built so far. Our people are Steam’s biggest competitive advantage, and we’ll continue investing in our people-first culture.

The Opportunity:

Getting goods into the U.S. can be difficult for our customers, and we are looking for someone that isn’t afraid of a challenge. As a Customs Specialist, you will be the bridge between our customer and U.S. government entities like U.S. Customs, FDA, and USDA. We are looking for someone that lives in the details Most of your day will be spent reviewing documents, entering accurate data for Customs, and ensuring our entries are compliant to U.S. standards. Delays, issues, and problems arise every day in logistics, so the ability to keep cool and act proactively is paramount.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborating with clients and partners to receive all commercial documents in a timely manner, reviewing for completeness, and entering key data points into our transportation system
  • Submitting timely customs entries at least 5 days prior to Port ETA to ensure our clients cargo is released in good order
  • Working with internal Drayage and Operations departments to ensure any line holds are resolved, customs exams are facilitated, and any agency requirements are processed
  • Work closely with the FDA, USDA, FWS, CBP, DHS, etc. to ensure complexities such as certain documentation requirements or regulations are fulfilled prior/during/after the customs entry
  • Process Post Summary Corrections (PSC) to correct or modify an entry
  • Support and lead client-onboarding calls and SOP implementation of our internal customs process and how Steam will execute the clearances on their behalf
  • Support HTS code/database creation of part numbers, product codes, country of origin
  • Support in auditing processes of entries and transactions to ensure accurate entry submissions
  • Issuing Delivery Orders (D/O’s) with all pertinent information to drayage partners that have pickup locations, Firms Codes, container information, etc. and tracking them all the way to ensure final delivery is in order
  • Become well versed in freight payments (PierPass/PayCargo/Carrier Sites/etc.) to Terminals, Ocean Carriers, and Ports to ensure freight charges are fully paid and we are eliminating possible storage charges to keep goods moving

Required Skills, Qualifications, and Experience-

  • Ideal for entry-level candidates who want to become an expert in customs clearance for international freight.
  • Details, details, details The job thrives on living in the specifics and translating those small details into big successes.
    1. Analyzing documentation, sorting and matching HTS codes, and capturing the correct currency valuations from Commercial Documents is key
  • Can you guide the client through an amazing customer experience?
    1. Complex and difficult puzzles are something you thrive on uncovering and solving for your customers
    2. You can show patience and empathy while having a heart of a teacher towards the customer
  • Proactiveness and having a sense of urgency in your DNA.
    1. Ability to engage our ocean carriers, airlines, terminals, and railyards professionally but with a sense of urgency obtain the documentation and information you need
    2. Confidently discuss with a client that a container is held up at the port/rail, precisely explain what is needed and provide them with an easy-to-understand solution.
