Job Summary

This Manager position is a technical position within the Tax Department with primary tax accounting and compliance responsibilities. The individual will be responsible for managing the preparation and review of federal income tax compliance and local tax filings for the non-insurance entities, oversee all outsourced state compliance, and manage any related audits. This individual will serve as an SME in partnership taxation, and will be responsible for supporting GAAP tax accounting related to quarterly and annual reporting for the noninsurance entities based on applicable accounting methods. This position will also play a key role in the Finance Modernization enterprise initiatives, by implementing automation and modernization of tax processes.

An individual contributor, the Manager, Tax will report to the Director of Tax Accounting and Compliance.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs quarterly and annual current tax provisions for noninsurance entities for GAAP reporting
  • Manage preparation and review of federal income tax returns and estimates for noninsurance entities.
  • Incorporate the owned Independent Marketing Organization(IMO) investments into the noninsurance entities' tax compliance and reporting.
  • Oversee and manage partnership tax compliance related to Company's IMO investments and related entities.
  • Collaborate and communicate with Company's management and business partners to establish future tax processes and procedures related to IMO investments.
  • Reassess state tax filing profile for non-life companies as a result of IMO investments.
  • Manage all aspects of noninsurance entities tax compliance including state income, franchise, property, and sales & use taxes.
  • Oversee all aspects of outsourcing process with accounting firms for state income tax compliance.
  • Performs internal controls and assists in maintenance of evidence of controls.
  • Responsible for communicating with auditors and providing requested information as needed.
  • Review check requests and wire payments for federal and state payments.
  • Perform tax research and makes recommendations based on analysis.
  • Responsible for managing federal, state, and local taxing authority inquiries and audits.
  • Negotiate and resolve state and local audits.
  • Responsible for SALT (State and Local Tax) aspects of business plans and updates.
  • Identify and implement automation and modernization of tax processes that increases efficiency and reduces tax compliance and reporting cycle time.
  • Lead other tax projects and perform analysis of new transactions, as needed.

Experience and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or equivalent degree; Masters degree preferred (in accounting or taxation)
  • 7+ years' experience required working in corporate tax environment or public accounting firm
  • 5+ years insurance industry and/or financial services experience preferred
  • Certified Public Accountant preferred
  • Experience working in regulated environment

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of tax accounting principles including ASC740
  • Demonstrated knowledge of tax software systems; including web-based compliance and research related packages
  • Good financial diagnosis and analytical skills and function well in a team-oriented environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly intermediate to advance proficiency with Microsoft Excel
  • Driven, team-oriented individual interested working in high performance culture

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills and courage to challenge existing processes
