The Community Service Society (CSS) is an independent, not-for-profit organization that has been at the forefront of public policy innovations that support low-income New Yorkers for more than 175 years. CSS runs a number of health insurance enrollment and consumer assistance ombuds programs that help over 100,000 New Yorkers enroll in and use health coverage and otherwise access health care. It also coordinates Health Care for All New York (HCFANY), a coalition of 170 groups dedicated to securing quality, affordable coverage for all New Yorkers. For over a decade, CSS’s health policy team has issued many influential reports that have led to meaningful policy and legal reforms for patients.
In order to amplify the voices and experiences of patients in the healthcare system, CSS hosts the digital organizing project “We the Patients” -- CSS seeks to hire a talented and motivated digital organizer and patient advocate to staff that project.
Job Description:
- Work in conjunction with the Health Policy team to grow and maintain We the Patients’ online communications platforms, particularly social media and website.
- Build and manage relationships with supporters and stakeholders, promote patient advocacy work, and provide calls-to-action and other ways for stakeholders to support health policy goals.
- Provide social media support for other CSS Health Initiative activities and campaigns, including Health Care for All New York and the #EndMedicalDebt campaign.
- Create and post content that engages and expands our audiences and drives conversations and support for We The Patients campaigns.
- Maintain editorial calendar for key advocacy campaigns, publications, and initiatives and engage supporters and coalition members in support of these priorities.
- Regularly review analytics data, research current trends, and propose and execute strategies to engage priority audiences through online channels.
- Manage interns, when available, to further We The Patients’ policy agenda and digital growth.
- Work with individual patients to train them to tell their stories and effectively engage with health care decision makers.
- Facilitate substantive meetings and calls with coalition partners, including coordinating strategic planning.
- Engage in communications activities targeted at traditional media and social media promotion and messaging, member communications, and coalition administration, including hosting the HCFANY.org and WeThePatientsNY.org websites and social media accounts.
- Other responsibilities as identified by supervisor.
- Bachelor’s degree required, studies in journalism, graphic design, and communications preferred.
- Master’s degree in communications, public health or other relevant field preferred.
- One to three years’ experience in organizing, and/or communications role, preferably in a nonprofit, public policy, or advocacy-oriented setting.
- Experience working on campaigns – either electoral or issue based.
- Creative, strategic thinker with excellent written and visual communication skills.
- Experience with Wordpress.
- Graphic design skills, experience in Canva preferred.
- Social media management experience and extensive knowledge of social media best practices.
- Knowledge of health policy and consumer advocacy issues preferred.
- Politically engaged and highly motivated.
- Strong project management skills.
- Well-organized, detail-oriented, and attentive to quality.
- Ability to work independently and under deadline required.
In addition to a resume and cover letter, applicants should submit one relevant writing/graphic design sample that demonstrates experience leveraging digital organizing for advocacy.
Salary and Benefits: This position is union-represented by local 1199 SEIU which provides an annual salary of $75,200.00 and comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage provided by 1199. Community Service Society provides a comprehensive employee benefits package including life, AD&D, 403b retirement savings plan, defined benefit retirement plan, flexible spending accounts, commuter benefit plan, EAP, and more in addition to paid holidays, vacation, sick, and personal days.
CSS currently offers a hybrid work environment requiring onsite work at CSS' office at least two days per week with three days being remote.
