About the Job

Under the supervision of the Chief of Physics, develops plans for treating patients with radiation performs quality assurance to ensure appropriate doses of radiation are administered, implements new clinical techniques, commission's equipment.

What you'll do

  • Provides consultation to the Radiation Oncologists in initial planning, simulation and techniques of external radiotherapy.
  • Develops image-based information from computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound and/or nuclear medicine studies to facilitate delineation of tumor and surrounding critical structures.
  • Generates a treatment plan for delivery of the prescribed dose of radiation to the tumor with linear accelerators, while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue, and calculates time of treatment.
  • Calculates setting of linear accelerators for the exact delivery of the prescribed dose, and records these values; based on the calculation, verifies that parameters are set correctly both prior to and on the first day of treatment.
  • Consults with Radiation Oncologist in planning treatments using radioactive sources (brachytherapy). Generates a treatment plan, selects the quantity and distribution of radioactive sources to use, and calculates the time of treatment.
  • Assists the Radiation Oncologist in the handling of radioactive sources (loading the sources in the applicators or needles, transporting them to the patient's room, transporting them back to the storage area at the end of treatment, keeping an inventory and finally storing them).
  • Follows procedures for handling, storage and inventory of radioactive sources in compliance with state requirements.
  • Review patient records on a weekly basis and at the end of treatment to monitor the treatment process. Provides consultation to solve diverse problems arising in specific patient treatment situations.
  • Provides in-house quality control on a daily basis for output constancy of the linear accelerators and absolute output calibrations annually; performs quality assurance on all accessories used with the linear accelerators and takes corrective action as needed.
  • Record calibrations of linear accelerators and quality assurance data as required by regulatory bodies.
  • Participates in a quality assurance program conducted by national agencies using theromoluminescent dosimeters.
  • Provides in-service training/education to radiation therapists on issues related to medical radiation physics and radiation safety. Assists the Radiation Oncologists in the development of new projects directly related to improving patient care. Commissions new equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Required: Master's Degree
  • Specific Degree(s): Physics

Licensure/Certifications:

  •  CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) from American Heart Association
  • Other: 1. Knowledge of physics of radiation therapy. 2. Knowledge of algebra, trigonometry and calculus. 3. Knowledge of clinical radiation therapy. 4. Knowledge of radiation dosimeters. 5. Knowledge of treatment planning. 6. Knowledge of computer use as it applies to treatment planning. 7. Knowledge of radiation safety. 8. Knowledge of human anatomy. 9. Knowledge of treatment delivery. 10. Knowledge of terminology used in radiation medicine. 11. Knowing of the use of electronic equipment for performing radiation measurements
