Position: Neonatal Advanced Practice Provider Manager


Join Our Team: University of Pittsburgh Physicians, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Neonatology are seeking an experienced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner or Neonatal Physician Assistant to lead our Advanced Practice Provider (APP) team.



Hours: Primarily 8 and 12-hour rotating shifts. Occasional 24-hour shifts are available to support our team staffing needs. The administrative duties of the role require a consistent presence during the week so exclusively 24-hour shifts are not available.


Location: Magee-Womens Hospital 


Position Specifics: Approximately 50% NICU rounding and 50% administrative duties. 5 years of level III or IV NICU experience required. Experience with supervisory or management responsibilities is preferred, but not required.


Department Details: This Pittsburgh based Level III unit is staffed by highly trained neonatal specialists. This team includes: neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses, nutritionists, developmental specialists, pharmacists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, a neonatal transportation team, and designated neonatal respiratory therapists.  The organizational collaborative efforts of Magee and UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh allow Magee’s patients to be supported by UPMC Children's medical team. This partnership enables patients requiring surgical intervention or extensive consultation to be transported to Children's for further management.  As a regional referral center for high-risk maternal and fetal care, Magee provides providers and hospitals across the tri-state area with access to the highest level of resources, resulting in the best possible care for patients.

Purpose:
The Manager, Neonatal APP is a Physician Assistant or Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner who maintains 24-hour accountability for leading and managing the clinical and human resources and administrative operations of an assigned area in neonatology. The Manager, Neonatal APP coordinates and oversees all neonatal physician assistant and certified nurse practitioner functions. The role of the Manager, Neonatal APP encompasses leadership, partnership, supervision, and interprofessional and interdepartmental collaboration in the implementation and evaluation of departmental programs and services to support strategic and operational plans. The Manager, Neonatal APP establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with physicians, other health care providers, patients, and their families to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care. The Manager, Neonatal APP demonstrates a commitment to the community and to their healthcare profession and will maintain clinical practice in the neonatal setting.

Responsibilities:



  • Provides departmental leadership to direct, supervise, and manage daily activities of the PAs and CRNPs and accountable to clinical staffing of the unit(s), which may include multiple hospital campuses/facilities; completes annual performance evaluations in conjunction with support staff. Participates in recruitment, evaluation, and management of PA and CRNP employees. Implements, maintains, monitors, and communicates Human Resources policies pertaining to PAs and CRNPs. Facilitates training of staff for all direct reports. Oversees staff adherence to compliance requirements including documentation, coding, licensure, internal and external audits, compliance and safety training (OSHA). Organizes and oversees staffing of assigned clinical sites with attending physician. Troubleshoots problems in clinical areas. Works in conjunction with clinical staff to resolve issues. Liaison for all advanced practice providers within their purview. Plans, implements and maintains a system to motivate staff development, including effective clinical orientation of Neonatal APPs and continuing education related to the care of neonates for nurses, Neonatal APPs and Neonatal APP students.
  • Applies principles of acceptable neonatal professional practice including but not limited to comprehensive physical assessment of the newborn/infant, appropriately orders and accurately interprets laboratory, radiographic and clinical data and communicates significant findings to the health care team regularly performing high level, invasive, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as umbilical line placement, intubation, lumbar puncture, chest tube placement and other procedures necessary for the care of the patient. Facilitates and/or participates in internal and/or external neonatal transports. Formulates a plan of care for patients that involves the patients caretaker as partner and considers the individual needs of the patient. Demonstrates critical thinking in all areas of professional practice. Practices solid communication skills and is able to articulate and translate the patient's condition to other care providers and to negotiate and make recommendations for changes in patient care and clinical practice. Patient documentation is comprehensive and promotes communication between caregivers. Incorporates acceptable standards of professional practice as well as business unit and health system's goals to improve patient safety, quality and satisfaction. Builds relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Provides education to patients' families to effectively guide them through the episode of care and transition to another level of care and/or home. Supports the development of students, staff, and colleagues, including accountability for professional development that improves quality of care and the practice environment. Accountable for facilitating neonatal nurse practitioner and physician assistant student experiences, including shadowing and clinical rotations and serve as a clinical preceptor. Creates an environment of continuous improvement, seeking feedback consistently.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of cultural differences and holds peers and team members accountable for healthy relationships. Serves as a highly engaged and full partner on the interprofessional care team and responds willingly to care team member needs for assistance and partnership. Adapts to change and demonstrates flexibility with the change process. Maintains a conscious balance between work and personal life. Models safe work hours and effective time management. Communicates with peers, members of the healthcare team, and management regarding any safety hazards identified in the workplace.

  • Masters or Doctorate degree in Nursing or Physician Assistant Studies required.
  • Completion of an approved Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program for CRNP and completion of an accredited physician assistant program and post-graduate APP Fellowship/residency in neonatology for Physician Assistant.
  • 5 years Level III NICU APP experience required; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Leadership ability to develop staff, establish and maintain standards of performance within a national context for neonatal advanced practice and comply with administrative requirements.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to effectively create relationships to support a healing environment with patients, families, staff, physicians and hospital personnel including senior management in both written and verbal communication.
  • Previous management experience preferred.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Eligible for licensure by Pennsylvania board of nursing, eligible for certification as a CRNP by Pennsylvania state board of nursing for CRNP or National certification, eligible for licensure by the Pennsylvania board of medicine/osteopathy, NCCPA certification for Physician Assistant.
  • NRP or STABLE required.
  • NCC required for NNP candidates.
  • CPR required based on AHA standards within 30 days of hire.
  • NRP certification listed must meet AAAP standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Neonatal Nurse Practitioner OR Physician Assistant (PA).
  • Act 33 with renewal.
  • Act 34 with renewal.
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal.
