This project aims to identify statistically significant trends in losses on onshore wind, offshore wind, solar and battery storage policies that resulted in a claim. The data and summaries from this project will be used by the engineering team directly to support the internal knowledge base which will ultimately help AXIS underwriters avoid, or adequately price future risks which could suffer similar losses. Where possible, these insights may also be used to assist project developers in their engineering design decisions. The output of the project will directly impact the business insights and decision making of the company.Wider than AXIS, supporting our renewable energy risk engineering expertise can drive best practice into the development, manufacturing and construction of renewable energy projects globally by learning the lessons of the past for all stakeholders. The role:Your primary role will involve reading final reports submitted for each claim and extracting key technical and financial information. The main type of report you will review is called a Loss Adjuster Report, which is a comprehensive assessment of the damage or loss to the renewable energy asset, and what caused it. It is a critical tool for all stakeholders in the claim process since it determines the validity of a claim and calculates the settlement, which covers one or both of physical damage and business interruption costs. You will use your engineering knowledge and judgement to determine the types and causes of loss from a technical standpoint, and carefully add the pertinent information into our Excel database and provide a well-rounded summary. This could include anything from: a gear tooth snapping causing a gearbox failure on an onshore wind turbine; numerous solar PV modules experiencing visible and microcracking from hail strikes; an offshore wind farm cable protection system failing leading to a damaged subsea electrical cable. You will also support important quality control exercises on existing entries and data control across the database. This is a unique opportunity to get to learn about the core workings, and failure modes, of grid scale renewable technology in multiple countries and landscapes. This is a part time position during the semester while school is in session and full time (37.5 hours/week) during the summer. The intern must be available between 8am and 6pm on weekdays. The minimum availability is 12 to 15 hours a week. Ideally, the intern should be able to work 20 hours a week.We are looking for:
  • A highly motivated Engineering undergraduate or graduate with strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Someone who is passionate about renewable energy technologies, such as wind and solar, and is considering a career in the energy sector
  • Ability to work effectively with an international Engineering team based in London, UK and at various US locations
  • A critical eye for detail as well as the bigger picture, such as spotting broad errors or mismatched data
  • A willingness to both ask questions if unclear and suggest improvements to the process.Requirements:
    • You must be registered as a full-time student in good standing with a GPA of 3.0 or higher
    • You must have completed Sophomore year
