Mission: The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History inspires a thirst for discovery and a passion for the natural world.

Position Summary: Responsible for managing and growing the Museum's membership program. This role is critical to fostering a strong community of supporters who are engaged with the Museum's mission to inspire a passion for the natural world. The Membership Manager will oversee member acquisition, retention, engagement strategies, and membership program operations. Includes significant database data entry.

Key Responsibilities:

Membership Growth and Retention
  • Develop and execute strategies to grow membership across diverse audiences.
  • Design and implement retention campaigns to strengthen member loyalty and reduce attrition.
  • Analyze membership trends and feedback to improve the program's effectiveness.
  • Work with the Philanthropy Director and the Philanthropy Officer for Leadership Circles to identify and implement membership and donor cultivation opportunities.

Engagement and Events - in collaboration with the Special Event Manager
  • Plan and execute member-exclusive events, including lectures and family friendly activities.
  • Collaborate with Museum staff to offer unique and enriching experiences for members.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for members, addressing inquiries and ensuring a high level of customer service.

Program Development and Communication - in collaboration with the Marketing Department
  • Create and manage membership materials, including brochures, newsletters, and digital content.
  • Coordinate direct mail campaigns.
  • Work with the marketing team to promote membership benefits through social media, email campaigns, and the Museum's website.
  • Identify opportunities for enhancing membership tiers and benefits to attract diverse demographics.

Administrative and Financial Oversight
  • Manage the membership budget.
  • Oversee the processing of new memberships, renewals, and acknowledgments.
  • Maintain accurate membership records and reports using Raiser's Edge and Ticketure systems.
  • Maintain membership database: run monthly reports, run queries when needed, and create mailing lists and email lists as needed. Provide data entry for all membership information from renewals and acquisitions.
  • Generate reports to assess membership performance and present insights to the Management Team.
  • Handles organizational donation requests, answers questions, provides research, fulfills website requests, and manages any specific needs of members.
  • Manages membership database coordinator who helps with data entry and communication with the members.
  • Participates in various committees as needed including education, museum wide visitor activities committee, public events, etc.
  • Participates as a colleague of the Philanthropy Division and supports all special events including the Mission Creek Gala, Santa Barbara Wine & Food Festival, and Mission Creek Beer Festival events, as well as others.

General responsibilities:
  • Provides excellent customer service to internal and external clients.
  • Periodically supports the daily operations of the Museum if needed.
  • Maintain an in-depth knowledge of the Museum's programs and priorities, takes responsibility to stay informed about happenings at the Museum and Sea Center, such as reading staff communications and attending meetings.
  • Ensures the Museum's presentation standards for cleanliness and maintenance are met by keeping work areas clean, picking up trash, reporting unsafe or unsightly conditions.
  • Maintain a clean, neat appearance and adhere to the Museum's uniform dress code.
  • Supports the Museum's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion for fellow staff, guests and the community.
  • Contributes to a positive guest experience by greeting and addressing any questions when encountering guests as they navigate through the Museum and Sea Center.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Requirements:
  • Experience in membership, fund development, or direct mail marketing.
  • Working knowledge of database programs (Raiser's Edge experience preferred).
  • Microsoft Office skills.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and organizational skills.
  • Professional demeanor with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Comfortable working with the general public, trustees, members, and donors on the phone, via email, and/or in person.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:
  • General office environment with occasional work throughout the Museum's facilities (galleries, conference rooms, and exhibit halls) and outdoors.
  • Frequent standing, walking, sitting, stooping, bending.
  • Significant telephone and computer work (repetitive movement - typing).
  • Ability to carry up to 10 lbs.
  • Requires flexible schedule, including some weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  • Ability to use: Personal computer and software (Microsoft Office and Outlook, etc.), two-way radio, standard office equipment; telephone, copier, printer, scanner, AV equipment, and various event equipment.
