Position Overview:

Selby Jennings is partnered with a national renewable energy commodity shop to source talent for a Power Trading Risk Manager. The Power Trading Risk Manager will play a pivotal role in implementing a risk framework through quantitative analysis. This individual will ensure that new commercial strategies align with portfolio performance expectations and adhere to risk tolerances. They must possess extensive knowledge of commodity market dynamics, tradable instruments, and risk management practices tailored to renewable resources. Collaborating with management, they will develop, review, and adjust portfolio strategies based on agreed-upon risk scenarios. Working closely with energy traders, they'll develop risk scenarios and assess potential impacts on the portfolio. Although this position does not currently involve direct supervision, it anticipates growth potential in line with the company's aggressive expansion. Remote work options are available.


Locations: This role is able to sit out of Houston, Scottsdale, Denver, Princeton, Carslbad, or San Francisco.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop models for gross margin at risk, focusing on projects with market price exposure.
  • Establish portfolio risk limits and maintain risk metrics accounting for market correlations.
  • Review market price volatility curves and correlation assumptions for risk modeling.
  • Benchmark trading strategy performance and set risk limits.
  • Utilize portfolio optimization techniques to guide hedge strategy decisions.
  • Collaborate with Market Fundamentals and Transmission Team to align long-term views with short-term strategies.
  • Support valuation of short-term hedge and PPA amendments.
  • Develop hedging strategies for REC, Capacity, Resource Adequacy, and transmission.
  • Create gas trading strategies to mitigate risk for conventional assets.
  • Collaborate with senior executives to set hedging and risk management strategies.
  • Develop market dashboards using Power BI or similar tools.
  • Participate in Energy Risk Committee discussions and present pertinent risk issues.
  • Lead management reporting on positions and exposures.

Key Qualifications:

  • Masters or Ph.D. in Engineering, Mathematics, Economics, or related quantitative field.
  • 5-10 years of quantitative experience, preferably in the energy industry.
  • Knowledge of US Electricity markets and power systems.
  • Proficient in predictive modeling and option valuation.
  • Strong programming skills, preferably in Python or R.
  • Ability to build Quant Lib and utilize stochastic calculus and Option Models.
  • Proficiency in SQL and data mining.
  • Ability to construct power fundamental models and analyze large datasets.
  • Familiarity with regulatory expectations and industry standards in risk management.
  • Experience in valuing and transacting transmission hedging and capacity products.
  • Strong relationships with credit and risk professionals.


Compensation: This position has a target compensation banding of $150,000 to $170,000 base salary annually plus an annual target bonus.
