Position Overview:

The VP of Product Engineering is responsible for product development, claims and regulatory for all brands in the company’s portfolio – WetBrush, Goody, Bioionic, Ouidad, Curls and others. The VP partners with the Business Units and Marketing to develop product. The VP manages a team of product designers, product & packaging engineer and compliance team located in US and China to create and launch innovative products. The VP manages end to end execution from design to first production working with cross functional partners – sourcing, forecasting, procurement, quality and distribution to ensure that launches are executed flawlessly. The VP plays a lead role in establishing timelines and managing projects, leads various stages of the stage gate process and presents business cases to the ELT to enable key decisions. In addition, the VP manages claims and compliance functions, utilizing internal capabilities and creating partnerships with external labs for testing and market leading claims. Finally, the VP is responsible Value Engineering projects


Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities:

Product Development:

  • Oversee the design, engineering, and innovation of hair accessory, hairbrushes, liquids and tools for all brands
  • Create overall product and packaging design with premium sensibilities. Ensure the development team continues to be at the forefront of novel printing/visual techniques/silhouettes to enable market leading prints and pattern work.
  • Understand and Knowledgeable on competitive Landscape.
  • Research and identify new technology, ingredients, formulations, constructions. Design and develop product innovations that are addictive, on trend, differentiated and superior to competitors.
  • Develop novel and superior claims. Use industry testing instrumental, consumer and clinical methods where they exist, and create new ones as needed.
  • Monitor regulatory environment in US, Canada, EU/UK, LATAM, UAE and other countries as needed and make sure the products are compliant.
  • Cultivate strategic creative relationships with existing and new suppliers and testing labs.
  • Ensure cost of goods targets are met for all products being developed.
  • Ensure IP/patent coverage/non infringement for innovations.

Management:

  • Manage a team of ~15 product designer/developers/regulatory in US and China. Set goals, monitor progress, manage merits/rewards, vacations and adherence to company policies.
  • Establish process and guidelines to ensure compliance with all regulations, safety standards, social mission standards and product quality standards.
  • Create and revise internal product development processes to ensure efficiency for all development. Develop and maintain national product launch calendar and communicate timelines and product specifications to relevant internal teams, such as marketing and operations.
  • Own project timelines after the project are approved to Proceed to placement of PO.
  • Create and track the Product Development budget for both Wet Brush and Goody brushes and accessories.
  • Manage the relationship between the internal team and external network of OEMs, ODMs, suppliers and testing labs.


Essential Cross-Functional Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with BUs and marketing to create in year innovation pipeline and longer term (3-5 years) strategy.
  • Develop and understand new technologies, materials, molding, manufacturing processes and vendor capabilities.
  • Work with Forecasting and Purchasing to ensure diligence on buy and inventory.
  • Work with all functions to deliver projects on time.
  • Plan and execute technical and customer testing processes & partners with insights team and manages/reports all clinical, and consumer testing for products in development. Support marketing, education and sales in developing a compelling product ‘story’, packaging copy, education and POS materials


Required Skills/ Qualifications:

  • Excellent project management skills, on time delivery, tight deadline control. Ability to create and manage complex projects and timelines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills. Able to efficiently anticipate, identify and articulate problems in real-time and provide solutions.
  • Effective communicator at all levels and with all constituencies from vendors to c-suite and board members
  • Exceptional ability to work collaboratively and effectively across different functions and different organizational levels
  • Entrepreneurial & creative spirit with sense of urgency. Ability to build new trends and find new opportunities.
  • Clear understanding of commercial dynamics and need for financially sound plans and decisions
  • Passionate, dynamic, creative, agile and comfortable with change


Education/ Experience Requirements:

  • 10+ years of product development experience. Hard goods experience required.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field
  • Demonstrable understanding of beauty categories, market and fashion trends, customer opportunities
  • Knowledge of and relationships with key industry players from vendors to retail and professional customers
  • International market experience with strong understanding of international regulations and compliance.
  • Experience in the Beauty Industry-Haircare, Accessories, Hot Tools is a nice to have.

The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.


Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office environment, sitting at a desk. Ability to Travel will be required on a limited basis.
