Metasurface Engineer Opportunity at a Leading AI Hardware Startup

A cutting-edge AI hardware startup, specializing in groundbreaking neural network computing technologies, is seeking a talented Metasurface Engineer to join their innovative team. With three years of stealth research and development, this company is poised to revolutionize key performance metrics in neural network computing, particularly in the burgeoning field of Large Language Models (LLMs).

About the Company: This pioneering company leverages advancements in metamaterials to create spatial light modulators with unmatched speed, density, and power efficiency. By combining these metasurfaces with traditional optoelectronics, they have developed an in-memory optical computer that outperforms current technologies and future projections. As they enter their first non-stealth funding round, they are expanding their team to further develop their Optical Computing Platform.

Role and Responsibilities: The Metasurface Engineer will play a crucial role in the ongoing development of the company's dynamic metasurface technology. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the design and optimization of metasurface elements for the AI accelerator chip, utilizing metamaterial principles to achieve desired optical functionalities.
  • Employing advanced simulation tools (Ansys HFSS, Lumerical, Comsol) to model and simulate the electromagnetic behavior of metasurface structures.
  • Designing metasurface elements to manipulate light at the nanoscale, including phase modulation, polarization control, and beam steering, while adhering to CMOS fabrication constraints.
  • Collaborating with optical, silicon photonics, and CMOS process engineering teams to integrate metasurface components into the chip architecture, ensuring CMOS fabrication compatibility.
  • Conducting rigorous electromagnetic simulations to optimize metasurface designs for performance metrics such as efficiency, bandwidth, and angular response.
  • Prototyping and facilitating the CMOS-compatible fabrication of metasurface structures using state-of-the-art CMOS processes, working with both internal and external fabrication facilities.

Requirements:

  • PhD in Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, with a focus on metamaterials and computational electromagnetics.
  • Minimum 3 years of proven experience in designing and simulating metasurface elements for optical applications, with a strong understanding of metamaterial concepts and effective medium theory.
  • Proficiency in simulation software such as Ansys HFSS, Lumerical, Comsol, or equivalent for electromagnetic modeling and design optimization.
  • Solid foundation in physics, particularly electromagnetism and optics, with the ability to apply theoretical principles to practical design problems.
  • Familiarity with CMOS fabrication techniques and constraints, with experience in designing metasurfaces compatible with CMOS processes.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

What They Offer:

  • Opportunity to work at the forefront of metamaterials research and development, contributing to cutting-edge optical technologies with applications in AI hardware acceleration.
  • A key role in an innovative AI hardware startup located in Austin, TX & Seattle
  • An opportunity to work with a small team of some of the smartest people in the industry.
  • Competitive compensation and equity options.
  • Opportunities for personal and professional growth in a dynamic industry.

Join this visionary company and contribute to transforming the future of AI hardware. Apply now to become a part of a team that is setting new standards in the industry.
