TerraSafe Materials is seeking a Senior Scientist to join our mission in developing innovative biomaterials for sustainable packaging solutions. As early-stage start-ups within Big Idea Ventures’ Generation Food Rural Partners Fund, we are dedicated to creating products that reduce the world's reliance on environmentally harmful single-use plastics.

We are looking for creative self-starters who excel in both independent and collaborative environments. At TerraSafe Materials, we value a culture of innovation where team members are encouraged to share ideas and lead the development of cutting-edge technologies, products, and processes. Our ultimate goal is to drive the growth of our companies while significantly reducing single-use plastic waste.

This technical position requires a background in lab work and process technology. We are open to candidates with varying levels of experience who demonstrate the right skills and potential. The role is full-time and based at our research and development laboratory in Raleigh, North Carolina.

  • PhD or Master's degree in Material Science, Polymer Chemistry, or a related field.
  • 5-7 years of experience in material science research and development, with a focus on biomaterials.
  • Proven track record of spearheading complex research projects and delivering scientific breakthroughs.
  • Comfortable working in ambiguity, with agile methodologies in a fast-paced environment and adept at collaborating across various disciplines
  • Strong understanding of biomaterials, biopolymers, and new technology innovations from the field of research and development. 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to think creatively and critically.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaborate within a dynamic team.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Research and Formulate TerraSafe Materials products for various form functions, including grease, moisture, oxygen, liquid barrier properties.
  • Help identify new innovative biomaterials and process technologies to improve or develop new products to replace traditional plastic products while meeting performance and cost targets.
  • Due Diligence on  intellectual property to contribute to the decision-making for licensing and purchasing.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and fast-paced discovery projects, to scout and test directions to solve material science and packaging challenges
  • Collaborate closely with cross-disciplinary teams, including designers, business development managers, engineers, seaweed specialists, and more
  • Design and execute experiments, analyze data, and present findings to drive decision-making and project progress.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest scientific advancements and industry trends, integrating new knowledge into ongoing projects.
  • Contribute to the development of intellectual property, including patents and trade secrets.
  • Technical support on developing grant and client proposals to unlock funding
  • Represent TerraSafe Materials to external partners from time to time
  • Liaising with academic institutions and commercial labs to organize third-party testing as required.
