We are seeking a Director/Manager of People Operations ready to build and lead the HR function for a pioneering tech startup in the live event commerce industry. This position is designed for a visionary HR leader who is skilled in establishing HR departments from the ground up, implementing best practices, and integrating effective HR strategies within high-growth environments.


Located in the heart of Santa Monica, this role is essential for someone who enjoys hands-on involvement and is ready to drive change within a startup culture that has traditionally managed HR functions independently. This role requires a proactive approach to building a structured HR department that aligns with our client’s rapid growth and innovative spirit.


Your Role: As the Director/Manager of People Operations, you will create the first internal HR function, setting the standards for HR practices and procedures in a company poised for significant growth. You will collaborate closely with hiring managers and executives accustomed to handling HR-related tasks themselves, guiding them toward streamlined operations and enhanced efficiency.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement HR frameworks that support the company's expansion from a mid-size to a major player in the global market.
  • Oversee the transition of HR responsibilities from hiring managers to a formal HR department.
  • Manage HR operations across multiple countries, including oversight of contractors in Canada, the UK, and Portugal.
  • Update and maintain HR systems such as Rippling for HRIS and ATS, ensuring they meet the organization's growing needs.
  • Lead critical HR projects, such as updating the employee handbook, reviewing compensation bands for market competitiveness, and implementing L&D initiatives.
  • Stay informed and compliant with employment policies and regulations both domestically and internationally.


Ideal Candidate:

  • Holds a Bachelor’s degree in HR, Business Administration, or related field, with a preference for candidates with significant HR leadership experience in tech startups during critical growth phases.
  • Demonstrates experience in building or significantly transforming an HR department, with a proven track record in strategic HR management.
  • Exceptional communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence and engage at all organizational levels.
  • Must be local or able to commute to Santa Monica 3-4 times a week to collaborate effectively with team members and leadership.
  • Open to a Director-level title for candidates demonstrating exceptional experience and leadership capabilities.
