Manager, Market Development

ISO New England Inc., One Sullivan Road, Holyoke, Massachusetts, United States of America
Req #1026

ISO New England is the not-for-profit, independent system operator responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable flow of electricity in our region and planning for the future of the electric grid. We are at the forefront of New England‘s ongoing transition to clean energy.

Market Development seeks motivated individuals to join our Market Design and Development team. Our job is to lead projects that advance competitive electricity markets, integrate new technologies efficiently, and help facilitate the region‘s clean energy transition. We work as a team, within the department, the company, and the region, to assess, design, and implement real-world changes to improve the electric grid and electricity markets.

As a Manager, Market Development, your primary responsibilities will involve leading projects and staff teams assessing market designs, recommending solutions, and engaging with stakeholders. Your teammates come from a variety of backgrounds - economists, engineers, data scientists, writers, traders, business professionals, and more. Collectively, we assign projects and project roles based on each person‘s expertise, passions, and goals. Candidates from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

What we offer you:

  • Hybrid work schedule with 3 days/week onsite
  • Relocation Assistance
  • Base salary plus performance bonus program, professional development and tuition reimbursement, enhanced 401k and financial planning, wellness programs with onsite gym, onsite cafe with free coffee, flexible work hours, access to business networks & more, all in a stable and supportive work environment

How you will make an impact:

This position offers a unique opportunity to have a direct, significant, and lasting impact on real-world outcomes while working in a rapidly-evolving industry that is at the forefront of energy and environmental policy. In this role, you will work closely managing collaborative, multi-disciplinary teams to develop recommendations to improve the performance of the ISO‘s electricity markets. This involves:

  • Reviewing and performing research and analyses of outcomes, market rules, participant actions, and policy objectives.
  • Evaluating solutions by defining objectives, explaining potential benefits and limitations, and substantiating solution approaches.
  • Proposing changes to market products and rules governing how products are awarded or priced, and explaining them to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Supporting regulatory submissions of proposed rule changes, including providing expert testimony.
  • Actively lead and develop a high-performing team by providing regular feedback, coaching, and performance management to ensure individual and team goals are met.

What you need to be successful in this role:

  • Bachelor or Master‘s degree in Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Business, Finance, Management Science, or other related discipline.
  • Managerial experience in the energy industry, market design, power systems, or energy trading, or closely related professional activity.
  • Ability to guide team members towards achieving goals.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including ability to work collaboratively and present to a diverse set of audiences.

  • Experience performing research and technical analyses to identify and explain problems, proposing and evaluating solutions, and executing project-based work.

Desired not required:

  • Knowledge of software and systems used to administer and clear markets, including by electric grid operators (e.g., clearing and pricing algorithms, bid submittal and qualification, or market settlement systems).
  • Experience using statistical analysis, optimization, simulation, and data analytics tools (e.g., Python, R, SAS, Matlab, SQL, Excel)
