Position Overview: Our client is looking for a skilled and motivated Transmission Planning Engineer to join their team. This role is pivotal in supporting the full project lifecycle, from development through to construction, by conducting internal interconnection feasibility studies and estimating network upgrade costs. You will be responsible for researching and communicating interconnection processes and requirements with utility companies and transmission providers. Additionally, you will perform analyses of solar project interconnection capacities on both distribution and transmission circuits, prepare and submit interconnection applications, verify and challenge interconnection study results, and negotiate resolutions with ISOs and Transmission Providers.


As part of the interconnection team, you will also collaborate with the development team to identify optimal locations for renewable energy projects.


This role reports directly to the Director of Interconnection and Transmission Planning.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze available capacity on distribution and transmission circuits for solar, PV+BESS and stand-alone BESS projects.
  • Assist in the preliminary design and sizing of solar PV and energy storage plants.
  • Research interconnection processes and requirements from utility companies and transmission providers.
  • Manage access to utility and transmission provider data services and application portals.
  • Oversee and coordinate relationships with interconnection consultants.
  • Conduct power flow studies for solar project interconnections.
  • Prepare and submit interconnection application packages.
  • Review, verify, and challenge interconnection study results, providing recommendations for project design and execution.
  • Negotiate with Transmission Providers to reach reasonable resolutions.
  • Perform injection studies to identify optimal locations for generator resources in the region.
  • Manage legal documentation with consultants, manufacturers, utility companies, and transmission providers, including NDAs, service agreements, and interconnection agreements.
  • Coordinate interconnection application payments with the accounts payable team.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on power systems.
  • 3+ years of experience in utility-scale solar and storage project interconnection planning.
  • Proficiency in Transmission Providers’ tariffs, business practices, interconnection standards, study practices, cost allocation methodologies, transmission planning standards, and system performance evaluation criteria.
  • Technical background in transmission systems planning or generator interconnection processes, with experience in utilities, ISOs, or renewable energy companies preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of utility company and transmission provider requirements.
  • Expertise in power flow and circuit study software such as PSSE, PSCAD, Aspen, PSLF, etc. Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is also required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • A resourceful team player with a proven ability to collaborate cross-functionally.
  • Strong attention to detail, personal responsibility, work ethic, and organizational skills.
