The Director of Venture Creation will lead efforts to develop and commercialize high-tech high-growth technologies and create a “best in class” organization to exploit the Grand Rapids scientific discovery base and innovations from around the region.


The Director of Venture Creation is accountable for developing and implementing a pipeline that delivers sustainable start-up companies from the portfolio of innovations generated by Grand Rapids regional companies, universities, colleges, and entrepreneurs that are utilizing startup companies to innovate new high-tech, high-growth technologies. They will also develop networks with key internal and external collaborators in the commercialization process; to include service providers, partner institutions, investors, etc.


The Director of Venture Creation will be a proven leader with technology commercialization acumen from either a corporate or university setting. This individual also will have solid academic credentials, community engagement skills, a passion for innovation, and an appreciation for the enterprise of university research.


In this role, the Director is expected to:

  • Work collaboratively with the MSU Foundation Board of Directors, Executive Director, other SI staff, corporate partners and the City of Grand Rapids to assist in managing the successful long-term strategic direction and goals of the program.
  • Work collaboratively to tie resources in the Grand Rapids community and create necessary ties to MSU engagement particularly when research expertise is required.
  • Closely collaborate with MSU and other organizations as necessary to properly support the mission of SI within the Grand Rapids ecosystem.
  • Build and shape a cadre of Entrepreneurs-In-Residence to advise, lead and consult stakeholders in technology and business plan development with special emphasis on tenants in the Bridge.
  • Strive to meet and exceed the Measured Outcomes (Metrics) for this proposal and vision of SI.
  • Lead and manage a team of professionals while simultaneously owning and driving a specific portfolio of projects.
  • Initiate, establish, develop, and manage collaborative relationships with key industry, academic and governmental partners to promote Spartan Innovation’s mission. This could include regional, state, and national economic development agencies, programs, and initiatives.
  • Oversee comprehensive outreach and communication strategies to promote a broad understanding of the role of Spartan Innovations in Grand Rapids and the state of Michigan with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide guidance on programs ensuring entrepreneurs are aware of Spartan Innovations, our support, our early-stage accelerators and our platform of programming.
  • Maintain a high level of tenancy and build and support a best-in-class incubator (The Bridge).
  • Manage and develop programs in support of the tenants and the Bridge to enhance support, education and the overall culture.
  • Build a culture and team that aligns with the goals of the MSU Research Foundation.
  • Prepare and deliver annual budgets, operating plan, and updates on a quarterly basis to Executive Director and the MSU Foundation board members when appropriate.
  • Enhance and expand the startup portfolio by providing strategic and business guidance as appropriate that drives quality projects.

  • Demonstrated track-record of leadership as an executive.
  • Quickly grasps the key technology concepts of entrepreneurship with an ability to see beyond an invention to a compelling new product or service.
  • Strategic acumen to understand, assess and choose among complex options.
  • Knows how to work with senior leadership of both corporate and academic institutions; understands the dynamics of startup companies and healthcare/medical markets. Excellent at working with others in a team environment.
  • Open-minded, collegial, and able to develop relationships based on trust, confidence, and respect.
  • Ability to interact with a wide variety of senior executives, clients, business partners, competitors, and others.
