Job Purpose:
The school registered nurse functions under the state of Maryland and SEED guidelines and policies. Supervision is exercised over volunteers, unlicensed personnel, and/or licensed personnel. To accomplish these responsibilities, the school registered nurse serves in the roles of program manager/coordinator, case manager/direct care provider, collaborator/advocate, educator and health counselor for the entire school. More specific:
- The professional registered school nurse is responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating and evaluating school health services within the context of the SEED School Health Program Model.
- Identifies the health care need of a specific student population and availability of
health services/resources
Plans and implements services to meet those health care needs
Assesses and evaluates the effectiveness of services and health care plans
Collaborates with a wide variety of school system and professional disciplines to enhance the educational process and promote an optimal level of wellness for students, families and staff.
- The school registered school nurse serves in the roles of program manager/coordinator, case manager/direct care provider, collaborator/advocate, educator and counselor for the SEED School of Maryland.
- The school registered nurse follows all policies and procedures of SEED MD
- The school registered nurse works in the Student Support Services and reports to Director of Student Services
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
- Promotes and protects the optimal health status of school age children
- Addresses system-wide health service issues, which effect the entire school population, i.e., population focused care
- Assures SEED is in compliance with mandated health service activities
- Provides professional health leadership to administrators and school staff
- Develops training for, trains and monitors staff that provide health services, including delegated procedures, the administration of medication to students, and other health related mandated activities
- Coordinates and participates in the establishment, review, and implementation of school health services, policies and procedures. Policies and procedures are reviewed annually and changes are made as needed. Oversees health policy and procedure review and revision
- Manages, oversees health staff and health nurse suite
- Develops and coordinates quality improvement activities for the school health service component of the school health program
- Documents, compiles and analyzes data for required reports on school health services such as the 30 day immunization report or end of the year report
- Prepares order for supplies and equipment necessary for nurses’ office
- Participates in development of school’s emergency health and crisis plan if consulted
- Assesses, plans, and evaluates the health services component of the coordinated
health program
- Assures that school health services and activities are appropriately documented
according to professional school registered nurse standards
- Maintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students
Works in collaboration with Director of Special Education for Exceptional Children and medical providers to coordinate health services for children with Special Needs
- coordinates on-the-job training for new school nurses
- Plans and implements school health management protocols
- Participates in home visits to assess the family needs as related to the child’s health when needed
- Coordinates of screening programs and immunization review/follow up for the school and develops timelines for screenings
- Develops procedures and provides for emergency nursing management for injuries/illnesses
- Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases
- Provides health education and anticipatory guidance
- Provides direct health education, and health counseling to assist students and families in making decisions on health and lifestyles that affect health
- Participates in health education directly and indirectly for the improvement of health by teaching persons to become more assertive health consumers and to assume greater responsibility for their own health
- Counsels with students concerning problems such as pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and substance abuse in order to facilitate responsible decision making practices
- Serves as a resource person to the school staff members in health instruction
- Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison health professional between the home, school and community
- Collaborates with other student services personnel to prevent health problems from becoming reasons for educational failure
- Seeks out local and other resources for use in the school setting
- Acts as a resource person in promoting health careers
- Functions as the liaison between the school and local health service agencies/providers and community resources
- Engages in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and school nursing practices
- Provides consultation in the formation of health policies, goals and objectives for the school district
- Promotes health through education and counseling; 5th grade growth and development; other programs as requested by staff
- Participates in the development and implementation of health promotion activities
- Where applicable, participates in the IEP plan development
- And other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

Applicable laws, regulations and standards pertaining to school nursing practice (NC Nurse Practice Act, Standards of School Nursing Practice and the Eight Components of a Coordinated School Health Program)
Current trends in nursing and of literature in the fields of school health.
Organization and administration of other cooperating agencies.
State and local laws relating to health and social issues.
Rules and regulations as required by MSDE.
Education & Experience:
Qualified to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland and holds an unrestricted license
Certified in CPR and/or Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline.
BSN/BS or more advance nursing education
Minimum of 3 years RN nursing experience in public health nursing, community health nursing, school health nursing dealing with young children and adolescents (ages 6-18)
Previous school experience preferred
Excellent written and oral communication skills needed
Specialized training in conflict resolution with children and families is a plus
Ability to:
Participate cooperatively in a program of school health nursing.

Communicate appropriately and effectively with students, parents, administrators, other school personnel, etc.
