JOB TITLE: General Supervisor (GS)
SUPERVISOR: Laboratory Director
LOCATION: Houston, TX
Position Summary
The scope of this role performs testing to provide data for diagnosis and evaluation in areas of assignment. The ideal candidate performs at a high degree of professional excellence including but not limited to sound, independent judgment, reliability, initiation, flexibility, interpersonal relationships and communications, and strong time-management ability.
The GS is required to conform to acceptable professional standards of conduct as defined by the laboratory leadership. The GS requires minimal or no direct supervision and is able to work independently. The GS provides direction and guidance to other laboratory personnel.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions
- Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization
- Is accessible to testing personnel at all times when high complexity testing is performed to provide on-site support, including day-to-day supervision of personnel performing high complexity testing.
- Fulfills responsibilities as delegated by the Laboratory Director and/or Technical Supervisor.
- These may include:
o Resolving technical problems and ensuring corrective actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from laboratory’s established performance specification
o Ensuring patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been take and the test system is functioning properly
o Provide orientation to all testing personnel
o Evaluating and document the performance of all testing personnel as required.
o Participates in developing/writing new procedures and revising old ones.
o Makes judgments concerning results and takes appropriate actions to maintain accuracy and precision with respect to quality control data.
o Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodologies, test specificity, test sensitivity, and factors that can influence test results.
o Assists in development of new procedures in regard to personnel, space, method comparison, cost analyses, and establishment of reference intervals.
- Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot and maintain laboratory instrumentation.
- Adhere to the lab's quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) policies and procedures.
- Analyze laboratory findings and evaluate validity of test results.
- Participate in quality assurance programs and activities to ensure the accuracy of laboratory results.
- Ensure that proficiency testing (PT) samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens and maintain PT records as appropriate.
- Consult with other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities
- Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and take appropriate action to correct the problems and notify supervisory personnel.
- Review pending reports and follow up to resolve outstanding specimens.
- Ensure an adequate level of supplies for testing.
- Responsible for accurately completing records and reports.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; participating in continuing education.
- Adheres to all laboratory procedures as stated in procedure manuals.
- Assists in training and orientation of new personnel.
- Communicates pertinent section information/issues to Laboratory Supervisor, Manager or other appropriate individual.
- Exercise all laboratory safety policies and regulations by OSHA for safety, infection control and Bloodborne pathogens. Maintains a safe environment in the lab at all times.
- Abide by all regulatory, company and departmental regulations, policies, and procedures, including the Corporate Compliance Program.
- Participate in lab meetings and generate ideas for improving efficiency and productivity in the lab’s operations.
- Must adhere to patient confidentiality and Code of Conduct set forth by the laboratory.
- Accountability for the service levels to achieve customer satisfaction and maintain productions and specified turnaround targets.
- Other duties, as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
- MLS, MT or MB Certification (ASCP or AMT) or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum of one year of experience in a high complexity CLIA licensed clinical aboratory
- · Ability to read and comprehend English and comprehend and follow oral and/or written instructions.
- · Good communication skills in both written and oral form.
- · Reasoning skills to apply principles to draw valid conclusions and interpret technical instructions
- · Advanced math skills to set limits, understand and use CV’s and SD’s.
- · Abstract thinking to drive development.
- · Ability to handle high stress levels due to working conditions and possible irregular hours.
- · Ability to recognize potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens, bodily secretions, and/or hazardous chemicals in the workplace.
- · Must be able to demonstrate the technical skills for routine testing in area of assignment within three months of hiring..
Education/Licensure
· Bachelor’s degree (MS degree preferred) in Medical Technology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology with:
o 60 semester hours including 24 semester hours of medical lab technology; or
o 60 semester hours including 24 hours of science that includes 6 hours chemistry, 6 hours biology, and 12 hours chemistry, biology or,
o Medical lab tech in any combination and laboratory training that includes either:
§ completion of a clinical lab training program or
§ 3 months training in each specialty in which high complexity testing is performed
· Previous experience in a lab or health care setting preferred
Supervisory Responsibilities
· Supervises testing personnel and other laboratory staff in the applicable department.

Work Environment: Work is performed primarily in a lab setting with frequent interruptions and distractions. Exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
