Type of Position and Time Commitment:


This is a full-time (100%) position starting the first Monday in August through the end of the first full week in June. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. during the school term (early-August through the end of May). Hours are dependent on school and department needs when school is not in session; including winter break, spring break, and summer.


Additional attendance may be required for In-service days, finals weeks, faculty & departmental meetings, Edgewood in the Community, Back-to-School Night, New Student Induction, Graduation, open houses, Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences, Orientation Days, evening and weekend events, and retreats.


Purpose:


This position is responsible for taking a mission driven approach to supporting Edgewood High School students in their post-secondary planning. As a member of the Student Services team, this position will work closely in a team of two school counselors, two college counselors, one Student Services assistant, and one school nurse, to provide a comprehensive and collaborative experience supporting our students in their personal, social/emotional, academic, and vocational development.


Key Tasks and Responsibilities:


  • Counsel, mentor, and support students throughout the college and career exploration process, including steps such as the composition of a working list of colleges, supervising the writing and editing of college essays, and the writing of recommendation letters for each counselee in collaboration with the Student Services Team
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current trends in the field of college admissions and educate students, families, and faculty about the college process; trends in admissions, both nationally and internationally; the importance of fit in the college search.
  • Create and maintain professional relationships with college admission officers, visiting universities to expand our school’s relationships with colleges.
  • Offer academic counseling on course options and selection with regards to postsecondary goals and taking into consideration the students’ abilities, background, and interest
  • Interpret results on Pre-ACT, ACT, SAT, PSAT and AP exams in an effort to best advise students on future academic and career goals
  • Organize school-wide administration of Pre-ACT, ACT, PSAT and AP exams
  • Help lead dynamic and developmentally appropriate parent and student education programs for grades 9-12, including classroom lessons, summer workshops, class-wide evening information sessions, and enrichment activities
  • Seek out resources to support students in self-reflection and research to find their post-secondary “best fit,” to be integrated into activities, lessons, and meetings throughout 9-12 grade
  • Create newsletters, checklists, guidelines, and other written communication for students and parents/guardians
  • Consistently use technology related to college and career counseling (SCOIR, NCAA Eligibility Center, CollegeBoard & ACT portals, etc.)
  • Coordinate and arrange conferences for students with college admission counselors who visit the school
  • Assist students with scholarship and financial aid information; serve as a resource for parents and students in understanding their financial aid packages received with acceptances
  • Prepare and supervise the processing of student evaluations, recommendations, transcripts, and other forms as required in connection with college applications;
  • Create career exploration opportunities including guest speakers, seminars, field trips, job shadow and internship connections with alumni, parents, and community organizations
  • Provide prompt and informative responses to student and parent requests via email and/or phone calls
  • Participate in professional development through membership in WACAC, NACAC, and other relevant associations
  • Collaborate daily with Student Services team on programming and individually provide comprehensive student support across academic, personal, social, vocational, spiritual, physical, and diversity/equity/inclusion related domains
  • Participate in school related activities and events and other duties as assigned
  • Assist in summer college application workshops (for additional pay beyond school-year contract.)

  • Solid working knowledge of Google Suite, SCOIR, Xello, PowerSchool, and other school and post-secondary related software
  • Positive appearance, attitude, and presentation with a strict sense of confidentiality
  • Regular and consistent attendance and punctuality is required and a condition of employment


Experience Preferred:


  • Bachelor’s degree required; preferably a master’s degree in higher education or school counseling
  • Possess a broad knowledge of colleges and universities across the U.S. and internationally
  • Multiple years of relevant experience working in selective college admissions desirable
