Albat is seeking a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) to join our team


The CWI will be responsible for verifying that fabricated and welded members substantially conform to project specifications in the field and at the fabrication facility. A thorough knowledge regarding the standards related to the construction and inspection of structural steel welding and bolting is required. Duties will include shop and field inspection of structural steel welds and high strength bolting. Maintenance of proper and complete files of field and laboratory data, reports, letters, RFIs, and other pertinent field data as well as clear communications with the Project Manager and the clients’ representatives are required.


The responsibilities of this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Reviewing and enforcing project specifications, shop drawings, welding quality control plans and applicable codes such as AWS, AASHTO, AREMA, ASTM, SSPC, etc. 
  • Verifying fabricator’s quality control procedures are being followed.
  • Monitoring fabrication/work for compliance with approved shop drawings, standards, and specifications.
  • Obtaining and reviewing mill orders, mill test reports, and certificates of compliance. Check materials for compliance with the physical and chemical test requirements of the specified steel specifications.
  • Prior to any welding, ensuring the welders and welding operators’ qualifications are in conformance with the applicable welding code and the special provisions supplemental requirements listed in Welding Quality Control. Qualifications must be within the allowed period of effectiveness.
  • Evaluating all welding equipment and weld filler metals for contract compliance and inspecting storage containers for welding electrodes and fluxes to verify that both drying and storage temperatures comply with specifications.
  • Verifying that welding is being performed in accordance with the approved WPS. This will require monitoring the weld joint details, the weld process and filler metals being used, preheat and interpass temperatures, welding technique, weld profiles, final weld finish, etc.
  • Inspecting cutting (shearing and flame cutting) and assembly of material.
  • Ensuring Contractor maintains heat number traceability of main members (flanges and webs).
  • Inspecting punching and drilling of holes and shop bolted joints.
  • Verifying shop assembly of field splices and match-marking of bolted joint components.
  • Inspecting grinding and cleanup of cut edges.
  • Verifying that welded girders are within dimensional tolerances (web flatness, flange tilt, etc.) of the AWS Code and monitor all heat straightening operations.
  • Checking fit-up of stiffeners and bearing plate flatness.
  • Performing a final evaluation of the materials and fabrication workmanship.
  • Documenting inspection in accordance with the client’s procedures.
  • Communicating with owners, fabricators, engineers, and other CWIs and NDT technicians.
  • Documenting activities and daily operations in daily inspection reports.


Requirements


  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) Certification
  • 3+ years of experience as a CWI in structural steel and bridge inspections
  • Experience performing QA/QC during structural steel fabrication and familiarity with AWS Codes D1.1 and D1.5
  • ASNT NDT Level II certification in Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) and Ultrasonic Testing (UT) , highly preferred
  • ICC Reinforced Concrete, preferred
  • ICC Pre-Stressed Concrete, preferred
  • ICC Structural Steel, preferred
  • Proficiency in standard computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe PDF, etc.
  • Strong communication, verbal and written


Physical Requirements

  • Must be available to travel
  • Must be able to work from heights, off ladders and scaffolding
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
