This role is full time in office in our West Hollywood, CA Office


Responsible for managing the Product Development department in its development, marketing, customer service, quality and regulatory duties. The selected candidate will help facilitate new formula development projects in all personal care categories.  This position requires an extremely organized individual with a strong work ethic. The Center office and this director position are located in West Hollywood, California. This role will be a critical factor for the smooth operation of the department in relationship with Innovation and Product Management and the attainment of its goals, as well as for the long-term growth of the company.


This position includes but is not limited to responsibilities focused on commercialization, contract manufacturer management/vetting and contract negotiation in coordination with VP of Product Development.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for leading department through progression/coordination of formula development from establishment of PDRs through formula redirect, approvals and commercialization. 
  • Finalize new formula and fragrance PDRs prepped by PD Team to send to Product Management Brand team for completion.
  • Lead collaborative development between fragrance houses and contract manufacturers to ensure fragrances are compatible by product format.
  • Review incoming formula samples for performance and adherence to PDR. Redirect formula samples as needed in correlation with PD Team, Innovation and cross functional teams. Anticipate commercialization challenges and work to mitigate in partnership with contract manufacturers.
  • Establish and maintain long-term partnerships with raw material suppliers and contract manufacturers.
  • In collaboration with innovation team, coordinate quarterly/annual touchpoints to review new concepts and relevant trends.
  • Lead daily external follow-up correspondences with raw material vendors and contract manufacturers.
  • Ensure daily CM Agenda project are updated in order to track progress and next steps.
  • Keep additional internal documents updated with development status.
  • Attend weekly development and innovation meetings to participate and capture formula updates and launch details. Lead relevant discussions to ensure that all stakeholders understand performance, cost and risk metrics for new formulas.  
  • Coordinate and perform new CM vetting duties with Quality, PM’s and COO
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams from Brand, Social, Marketing and Design to ensure proper marketing copy is received and utilized (per Master Copy Worksheet).
  • Prepare and/or review new product detail documents to help train Customer Service Department and upload/maintain GURU files. Educate and answer Customer Service formulation questions as needed.
  • Monitor customer service feedback to identify opportunities for improvement or quality defects of formula. Work to establish root cause and trouble shoot in coordination with QA and other relevant cross functional teams.
  • Assist with developing and training brand procedures and protocols (SOPs)
  • Research competitive brands and gather information for comparison analysis.
  • Attend raw material supplier education meetings and capture appropriate notes for use on future development projects.
  • Utilize Share Point Project File Software
  • Manage the maintenance of Approved Formula PIF Files


Ability to:

  • Understand & communicate brand identity and customer target to development partners.
  • Research seasonal product concepts in corresponding markets.
  • Lead in weekly conference calls with contract manufacturers to facilitate formula development and related product needs.
  • Travel to US based and international Contract Manufacturing locations for development meetings and production approvals.
  • Attend relevant Trade Shows throughout the world appropriate to trend, development and educational goals.
  • Review and provide color match adjustment instructions for color cosmetic formulas in correlation with Innovation and brand team feedback. 
  • Approve pre-bulk and pilot/full batch production as primary or backup.
  • Receive and review industry publications.
  • Plan, prioritize tasks and direct while retaining focus on big picture goals.
  • Maintain a consistent organized work environment and ongoing motivation to reach objectives under fast-paced demanding circumstances.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.


Education/Experience:

Bachelor's degree from four-year college/university. 8+ years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
